Oh look, It’s the Minute Men in a blender...

Yet another product of the Brighton hit factory, Cold Pumas are what you get if you feed indie kids up on a diet of tea, scones, ice cream and sunshine and then let them loose on a bunch of musical instruments; i.e. infuriatingly good art pop that sends guys like me mental when it comes to explaining it.

They first came to our attention after releasing 'Beat Mystery' on Upset the Rhythm last April, and for what appears to be a group of fairly happy-go-lucky kids, Cold Pumas' music is as complex as it comes. First impressions sound like a room of tumbling drums, pulsing guitar tones and throbbing bass notes with no discernable structure, but give it a while and out of the haze and fuzz emerges incredible metronomic dance music which sounds half like a Health record skipping along.

All good so far, right? Wrong. Just when I’m starting to figure these guys out they do something completely off the wall to throw me off. Doomy noise tracks build into !!!-style dancefloor bangers, jerked-up punk/funk numbers get strange, gothy shoegaze vocal lines piled on top of them, and the band even slip into the odd 'conventional' sounding song just to mess you up some more. However, Cold Pumas' best trick is that despite the complete randomness of their music, they somehow manage to sound completely coherent and together whenever you check them out live.

About to hit the road with their buddies Friendo, the Pumas are also poised to release a double A-side on Volvar Records in the next few weeks. Just don’t ask me to explain what it sounds like; my head hurts enough already...
