Denim and leather...

It might be that it has a pizza joint called Death Metal Pizza, or it could be due to the fact that the entire of the world’s music media descends on the place once a year without fail, but it seems that bands from Austin can do no wrong at the moment. After all, when a town produces the Strange Boys, Harlem and Ringo Deathstarr all in the space of 3-4 years, even people from California have to admit that the place is on a roll.

However, as with most things, success breeds its own problems. With so much hype bandying around the internet about any kid from South Texas who can rock a denim jacket and can at least pluck a guitar string, it’s easy to start double-guessing yourself and thinking that any band from Austin is automatically a case of style over substance. Luckily I’m a fairly open minded kind of guy, or else I probably would’ve given up on Love Inks  as soon as I clapped eyes on their leather jacketed, forest dwelling press shots.

A dreamy mix of reverb, bass and a vintage drum machine, Love Ink’s music is what would happen if someone had got the Vivian Girls to play Cocteau Twin songs. The real genius is that, rather than being either too twee that you have to use a sick bucket to get through one of their records, or so lo-fi that is gets annoying, this band has a backbone that is made from pure, weapons grade pop. It means that they could pretty much flirt with any genre they want and still make music that makes you go ‘ahhhhh’ like someone has just put a box of kittens in front of you.
