New Bands: Record Shopping with Sex Beet

Sex Beet are probably the best thing to come out of Leicester since, well, forever. Don't get me wrong, the Orange Tree, The Shed and Sophbeck are all rad and everything, but a town that boasts Kasabian and Showaddywaddy as their main musical exports and calls bread-rolls cobs can hardly have much claim on being the centre of the universe, musically speaking.

But that's all going to change. Starting out as a side-project of Lust, Sex Beet can only be described as a mix of garage rock and noise punk anchored with slashing guitars and crazy keyboard squeals. It's like partying at one of those surf-shack go-go dance fests and finding it crashed by a bunch of hard drinking bikers. Seriously, give it two years and everyone will think Leicester is somewhere near San Diego.

We took the guys to Rough Trade for a spot of record shopping – after all, everyone knows that the people who really know about music are the guys in bands. And this is what they came up with:

Will (keyboards): The Tandoori Knights - 'Pretty Please' 7"

I picked this because I like King Khan, and I like Bloodshot Bill, and it's like them two basically. And my surname's Night and it's a really good record.

What's it sound like?

It's King Khan with some Indian vibes going on, and it's pretty good. Indian food's pretty good, Tandoori chicken is always nice. It's only a 7”, not an essay.

Tom (drums): The Hospitals – 'Hairdryer Peace'

I picked this because I really like The Hospitals, and I like drummers who can sing. It's really good to listen to on the tube and pretend you're going to fight people and then not do it.

What's it sound like?

A fucking head-ache. It's absolute noise and drums. It's pretty much singing and drums.

Luke (guitars): Thee Oh Sees – 'Help'

I picked this just because it's great. John Dwyer is a bit of a hero to me. He's in like 50 bands: the Coachwhips are the best bands, and he's in a gay German electro band, which I can't pronounce the name of, but it's really cool. The Oh Sees do like 3 albums every month and they're all really good.

What's it sound like?

Fucked up. It's like Coachwhips but slower. And it's got a girl singer, and girls are cool.

Thanks to the guys over at Rough Trade for helping with this. A seriously good record shop and they sell amazing coffee.
