New Bands: Sauna Youth

Must be the Hot Tub Party Machine

Bored of all those electronic, dubstepy, shoegaze bands that seem to everywhere right now? Yeah me too a little bit. Don't get me wrong, I like fuzzy haze as much as the next guy, but beneath this calm, well constructed exterior is a guy who grew up listening to The Refused and American Nightmare. Sometimes however, to quote Henry Rollins, I just want music that “makes me want to fuck on the floor and break shit”.

Thank god someone invented Sauna Youth. Not only is their name a clever pun on Sonic Youth (hardie ha ha ha), they make hard-pounding melodic indie punk that sounds like Jawbreaker, Dagnasty, Pavement and The Replacements all boiled down into one neat little package. What’s more, I’ve also been digging on their live shows. First, they totally smashed it when they played Offset this year, and when I managed to catch them again at the Nest last month they totally killed it. I also heard they went down pretty well when they played with Fucked Up down in Richmond the other day.

It’s not only me who's been keeping a close eye on these guys. Suplex Cassettes featured them on their ‘Endless Bummer’ surf comp a few weeks ago, and are poised to release an EP called ‘Mad Mind’ as we speak. You can also download a loose collection of demos and b-sides called ‘Planet Sounds’ from their blog. I suggest you do, as everyone needs this band in their lives.
