Sailing the sea of love

You know how everyone’s always going on about pop eating itself, but you’re never really sure what they mean? Well here’s a real life example for you. You might remember that around this time last year we featured a garage-punk band from Belfast called Girls Names on this here New Bands series; now, Sea Pinks are basically the same band – reshuffled and making what is probably best described as super-nice dream pop.

In fact, if I’m being more accurate, Sea Pinks are Girls Names flipped completely on their heads. In this incarnation drummer Neil Brogan writes all the songs backed by Girls Names' frontman Cathal and their mate Claire.

It’s not just the personnel that have been swapped around, however. Whilst both projects undeniably share similar influences – namely c86 jangle pop and '60s doo wop – Sea Pinks’ happy-go-lucky indie pop is almost the polar opposite to their other band's gaunt and slightly haunted garage rock. To be even more simplistic, if one band is Belfast’s version of the Smiths, then the other is Northern Ireland’s belated answer to Orange Juice.

Still only a fledgling project, releases are pretty low on the ground at the moment. There was a 12” EP and a cassette album, but they’re both sold out now, although you can still download the record from Bandcamp. We strongly suggest you do.
