New Bands: Weird Dreams

New Bands: Weird Dreams

Lay off the acid, man...

2010 has been a strange old year for the East End’s band scene so far. With venues closing, Dalston being clad in brand new shimmering concrete and the inevitable transformation of Shoreditch into another Camden continuing unabated, it’s been cool that a handful of really decent bands have managed to crawl from the wreckage.

Weird Dreams are one of my favourites; a trio made up of Doran, who writes the songs, Craig who plays the drums and Hugo, who rocks the bass. Somewhere on the internet it says that they originally wanted their washed-out pop to sound like Lou Chirstie and The Tammys or anything that was on Kent Records back in 1967. They kind of got there, but rather then ending up  like some pub rock band your uncle watches every Saturday in Walthamstow, they’ve managed to slip into a drug-fuelled haze of Lou Reed, The Pastels and Aztec Camera, which let’s be honest is infinitely better.

Already loved by the Sex is Disgusting and Tough Love crowd, the band have managed to pump out a sold-out tape on Sleepy King Records and are poised to release a split 7” with Total Slacker later this month, as well as opening up for Not Cool and Dance Magic Dance’s Twin Peaks Halloween Spectacular over the next few weeks. Not bad for a band who only formed at the start of the summer.

As previously mentioned, Weird Dreams will be supporting Not Cool at the Macbeth on the 20th and playing at the Old Blue Last on the 30th. The Marshall Teller 7" is out later this month.
