Heard of FREEZE!, the talented comedy duo made up of award-winning comics Tim Key and Tom Basden yet? If not, you should have. Emma McAlpine takes a closer look.

The Invisible Dot seems a fitting venue for FREEZE! - a comedy duo made up of Edinburgh award-winning comics Tom Basden and Tim Key. Situated up a flight of stairs in the labyrinthine Camden Stables Market you certainly wouldn't know it was there if you weren't looking for it. The club itself is a small 50-or-so capacity room opposite the Cuban bar's upper deck. It's a quirky little venue and on a warm evening, you can't beat a mojito on the roof during the interval. The show is equally unconventional; combining both poetic and musical talents of the pair along with funny dialogue, sketches and short films.
If you haven't seen FREEZE! perform together it might seem like the two are a rather unlikely match; Basden often has a silent on-stage persona (his 2008 if.comedy-winning show was called Tom Basden Won't Say Anything) while Key can be loud, abrupt and even bossy when in poetry mode. Yet that is exactly why the dynamic work so well; Key speaks for the both of them, a sort of Oliver Hardy character to Basden's Stan Laurel. Basden is the fall guy, the one who gets a drink thrown at him, the one who gets teased about his T-shirt.
Since their June run here last year, Key went on to win the biggest prize in British comedy - the Edinburgh Comedy Award for 'Best Show' while Basden won a Fringe First award for his refreshingly (a)political satire PARTY. It's safe to say that these guys are at the top of their game at the moment and it's great that you can still catch them performing in low-key venues like the Invisible Dot. Check 'em out!
Freeze! will be at the Invisible Dot on Monday 31st May and 14th June.
