Every Friday, our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week to come. Emma McAlpine selects her top three gigs.

Monday 18th-Saturday 30th July
Sam Simmons: Fail @ Soho Theatre

Australian absurdist act Sam Simmons, debuts his hit Edinburgh show in London. After his girlfriend left him and he was down to his last $14, Simmons began to feel suicidal. In this wonderfully surreal and experimental show, the multi-award winning comic explores several reasons to be cheerful with songs about wool, gameshow questions, hilarious physical clowning and bizarre musings. A must see for those who like their comedy twisted and original.

Tuesday 19th July
Toby: Lucky
@ Invisible Dot

"Sarah: childlike, troubled and suffering from delusions of grandeur. Winner of the Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School Theatre Prize 2003. Lizzie: gifted, loyal and suffering at the hands of her sister Sarah. Just enjoys the taking part. Both still waiting for their luck to change."

An Edinburgh preview of new material from brilliant sketch duo Toby, a pair of twisted sisters vying for their Mother's affection. They earned great reviews at last year's Fringe, and this new show will almost certainly be worth a look.

Thursday 21st July
Times + Live Comedy @ Wilton's Music Hall

Another excellent Times+ line-up at the lovely Wilton's Music Hall. This month's show sees performances from twisted pop cabaret act Frisky & Mannish, boisterous wit Jarred Christmas, exciting newcomer Imran Yusuf, plus hilarious new characters from Colin Hoult.
