The West End adaptation of Flashdance has posted its closing notices.

Flashdance The Musical, the latest film to become a West End musical, has posted its closing notices for 15th January 2011, at which point it will have run for less than four months.
As predicted here, the show received lukewarm reviews, with three stars across the board except for Charles Spencer, who gave it two, and Michael Coveney, who fulfilled another of our predictions by raving about it. No one came out as a closeted die hard Flashdance fan as we had hoped, though Michael Billington rather shockingly wrote that he hadn't seen the film before reviewing the musical. Despite the tepid reception, Flashdance The Musical was expected to run longer because of the hit film it was based on. So what went wrong?
According to the critics and some of the blogs, it seems that the additions to the plot were pretty bad and the new songs were inoffensive at best. The stars Victoria Hamilton-Barritt and ex-Busted member Matt Willis received a mixture of OK comments and even Arlene Phillips's choreography got mixed reviews. The overall feel is that the show was just a bit “meh”.
But does this mean that people have lost interest in musicals based on popular films? (we imagine that the writers of Ghost The Musical, which opens in June next year, are probably poohing their pants at the moment). Whether or not this is the case, it would seem that to do a decent run you need a decent show. Huzzah for that.
