General Fiasco at The Borderline

General Fiasco at The Borderline

Saturday is not a great day for me: firstly my iPod decides it has had enough and passes on into the Apple afterlife, and then, as I'm about to start my interview with General Fiasco, my trusty Dictaphone of many years decides it too had supported me for far too long. Try as I might, it refuses to come back to life and so I launch into my interview with only a pen and paper as my aid.

It doesn't really work and as I look over my hastily scribbled notes I fear I'll be sued for libel if I try to replicate our conversation on the page. Seeing as General Fiasco list their legal team amongst their contacts on myspace, I decide there and then to scrap the interview idea and dump my Dictaphone in the first bin I find.

What my failed interview does manage to tell me though is that General Fiasco are a young and quietly confident trio. They're polite - almost too polite. Are they really going to make an impact when they take to the stage at The Borderline? I needn't have worried. As they launch into their first number it's clear that however unassuming these boys appear to be, they clearly know how to get the crowd going.

Songs that sound 'ok' on myspace suddenly sound completely different live. I find myself wanting to join the throng of 14 year olds jumping around in front of the stage. Owen's distinctive Northern Irish vocals are excellent and keep the energy of the whole show going. Previous single 'Rebel Get By' and the new single 'Something Sometime' have me stamping my foot and yelling along with the chorus much to the embarrassment of my boyfriend.

I leave the gig feeling like I'm 14 again, and finally understanding why General Fiasco have been getting many industry types so hot under the collar. It might be indie pop and it might have been done before, but these guys aren't apologetic about that and besides they're doing a damn good job of it.
