Plugs is the brainchild of Morgan Quaintance, formerly of knob-fiddling electro band Does It Offend You Yeah? Though created in a similar electronic vein, Plugs' music is a little less punishing, yet equally as memorable; their off key vocals, field recordings and synthy beats make for some floor filling anthems. Delightfully simple lyrics are teamed with a smattering of tame percussion to create minimalistic electro fuelled tunes and they never fail to impress.
In anticipation of their performance at Field Day, I have a quick chat to Morgan about the past, present and future of Plugs.
You've been compared to a myriad of other artists, from Hot Chip to the late, great Larry Levan. Are you pleased with the comparisons?
You know comparisons really say more about the listener then the band. They're kind of a safe way of telling how much a person knows about music. For instance if someone approached me and said they could hear the influence of Vernon Reid and the Black Rock Coalition in my guitar playing, I'd be impressed.
You've done remixes for big bands such as the Noisettes, who else's music would you love to get your hands on?
Yeah that Noisettes remix was a lot of fun. Too bad they didn't pay me for it. Oookayyyy. Lets see, who would I like to remix? Well getting the chance to work with Vernon and the Coalition guys again would be awesome, so I guess I'll have to go with Living Colour.
You've been named The Guardian's New Band of the Day. Are there any more prestigious titles you hope to achieve in the future?
You know I'd like to win a grammy or five. Isn't it interesting how they just throw those things at artists? I mean nobody ever just gets one Grammy. People always end up with about five gongs, and they're all for the same thing. I swear Kanye West won awards for "most innovative video", "most exciting use of moving image in the promo form", "most original use of actors in a short film clip set to music", and the one he was really counting on "most unique visualization of a musical concept".
What exciting things lie ahead for Plugs?
We are working together with the Black Rock Coalition to produce a movie about 3 young guys trapped in a soulless LA suburb. The only way they can get out of the rut they're in is through music, and skateboarding. We've got Laurence Fishburne on board. He plays a professor of African American studies.
Like we mentioned, Plugs will be playing in Victoria Park on Saturday as part of Field Day. Click here to read our interview with Mogwai.
