Easter Sunday is traditionally a time of blessing; a time to reflect on the train wreck of our lives and either attempt to recompense by attending a church service, or to languish in the glutinous den we call home, eating chocolate and binging on movies. The crowd at Cargo of course are practising the alternative Easter pastime of getting spannered whilst listening to cutting edge electronic music; luckily for them at the hands of the ultimate duo: Stuart Warren Hill and Robin Brunson AKA Hexstatic.
They walk onto the stage shrouded in glittering background visuals and proceed to hammer the waiting fans with a splicing of tracks from their album 'When Robots Go Bad'. The crowd erupts not only in response to the incredible music, but also the amazing, sometimes hysterical visual effects (which range from popular films, to manga to strange men with intrusive facial hair). The crowd love every minute of it, but the duo hardly ever look up.
Later they are joined on stage by Sabirajade for a rendition of their classic hit ‘rollover’. The singer is met with a lukewarm reception from the crowd, who don’t seem too pleased with her presence or vocals, and when she asks for a rewind on ‘roll over’ nobody, including Hexstatic, seems to want one. Leaving the stage, she was applauded apathetically: a shambolic performance.
The audience only have eyes for Hexstatic, who seem to be getting more energetic by the minute, and every song has people pumping their fists into the air. Their energy keeps people pouring in from the garden, and those with any personal space jump or wave hands to a blinding mixture of electro-pop cuts, hip-hop, and acid house. Brilliant.
The end of their song 'Salvador' elicits a massive round of applause – the duo seem astounded and bow gracefully. They manage to belt out two more songs from their new album before finally being switched off, to an arsenal of shouts, pumped fists and appropriate nu-rave whoop-whoops.
All in all a terrific night, the only one thing could have enhanced it for your correspondent would have been a pair of cool 3-D glasses.
