Gang of Four at the Macbeth

Gang of Four at the Macbeth

So as you may have noticed if you were looking over the site last weekend, we gave away a pair of tickets to Gang of Four’s secret Macbeth show on Monday night. We caught up with our winner George Tyler to see how he got on:-

Hey George! How was the Macbeth?

Brilliant! I’ve always been a huge Gang of Four fan, but never in a million years thought I’d get to see them up close and personal in a tiny pub. So naturally I was pretty excited.

Did Gang of Four live up to your expectations?

They’re pretty intense for a bunch of middle-aged guys, and 'Damaged Goods' still has the snarling power it probably did when they first practised it in Leeds all those years ago - even though Andy Gill and Jon King are the only original members.

I was pretty impressed with Jon King. Even after all these years he stills goes completely mental. At one point he jumped up and grabbed the lighting rig and hung there for what felt like ten minutes. It was pretty cool, but I couldn’t help but be a bit worried about his back.

Andy Gill spent the entire gig looking scary.

What did they play?

Well as the band are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of 'Entertainment!', the set list revolved around that. 'Return the Gift' and 'Damaged Goods' were both good, but the best song had to be 'Anthrax'. Starting with the customary feed-back it kept building up and building up until it just went crazy.

It wasn't all 'Entertainment!' though; they played a few later ones like 'We Live As We Die Alone' and 'Cheeseburger'. There was unfortunately no outing for their last classic song, the campy genius of 'I Love A Man In Uniform'.

Yeah, we love that one too. Over-riding impressions?

It’s pretty clear to see why Gang of Four is so revered as one of the greatest post-punk bands. They should definitely play more pubs!

Gang of Four play The Forum on the 26th of September. Incidentally, Spoonfed is having a party at The Macbeth on the 10th of September as well!
