Using the appropriate theme of 'Baptism' for their genre-blending show, Liverpool arts collective Mercy bring their sixth, site-specific production to St Leonard's Church in Shoreditch.

Mercy! It’s the return of the wonderful Wave If You’re Really There. Their last sell-out ‘happening’ was in St Leonard’s Church in Shoreditch and was, appropriately enough, marriage-themed. They’re sticking with both the lovely location and religious vibe again - this time it’s 'Baptism’. The event will bring together all sorts of cultural genres from poetry to music, art and multimedia stuff, as well as frequently sending these forms crashing gloriously headlong into each other.
WIYRT is the love child of Liverpool/London-based creative agency Mercy and spiky art-pop band Wave Machines – who’ll be kicking things off with a collaboration with poet Nathan Jones, and round up the night with a headline set. The filling for the Wave Machine sandwich looks pretty tasty too: there’s spoken word from David J and Saleena Godden, hostess of literary salon Book Club Boutique (in keeping with the theme, she’ll be exploring ‘sin, purity and heavenly delights’).
Sarah Nicolls, contemporary pianist who Radio 3 listeners might be familiar with, will be matching grand piano with electronics and poetics, while Gary Daly (lead singer of '80s band China Crisis) performs solo material. Singer/songwriter and rising star Eugene McGuiness delivers a set with his band, Eugene and The Lizards, as well collaborating with performance poet Ross Sutherland. Sure to be a highlight of the evening, Sutherland will direct a somewhat absurd musical of his own life, in which he will be played by a female lead...

And if that last bit sounds somewhat silly, it is worth pointing out that WIYRT wears its erudition lightly; the last event prompted as many belly-laughs as sagely nodded appreciations of artistic skill. Plus, there’s dancing. On church pews no less. What more could you ask for, really?
Wave If You're Really There is at St Leonard's Church on Saturday April 10th at 7pm.
