It's time to neck a keg...

4th July

This side of the pond the 4th July is probably not a major date for the diary... until now, that is. Because we've come up with the top five American Independence Day events kicking off in London this month. So, whaddaya say? Lets exchange those s's for zee's, inappropriately ask for the bathroom in the middle of a pub and prepare to get merry from liquor-filled red cups. It's time the Yanks and Limeys put our jam vs jelly, biscuit vs cookie differences aside, sat down on our fannies and toasted to, erm, our common language?

The Blues Kitchen, Camden
What better way to celebrate the day we finally let the Americans fend for themselves, than doing one better than our pals across the pond and gorging on a veritable feast of hot dogs. That's right folks, the Blues Kitchen are holding a totally rad all-you-can-eat hotdog competition for aficionados in the obesity stakes. With mustard, onions and water on tap to wash away the pain, TBK are challenging you to obliterate the measly 13 hotdogs in half an hour record set last year. Child's play. And with £100 up for grabs, we reckon things could get a little messy. For those of you with more respect for your stomach lining, just turning up in red, white and blue will earn yourself a complimentary dog in a bun, while passport-approved Americans can enjoy a free bevvie. Well, shucks, ain't that nice?

The Lexington, Islington
Just a hop, skip and a jump from Spoonfed's very own headquarters, The Lexington are hosting a night of folk-rock and alt-country in the way of James Walbourne and band, Dreaming Spires and Two Fingers of Firewater. Picture yourself cracking open a cooler of beer, stretching out on a porch swing and letting the sweet folksy symphony of Walborne wash over you. That is until the “foot-stomping guitarist” lets loose and then there'll be no excuse not to throw your shapes on the dance floor when those Jeffs, Brads and Drews come asking.

Christopher's, Covent Garden
Running throughout 4th July week, Christopher's head chef, Francis Agyepong, has rustled up an Independence Day menu that'll leave a big fat trail of saliva dripping from your chin. Well, shut those mouths please because this joint is on the classier side of things, serving up the likes of lobster baked potato, BBQ pulled pork tortillas and lashing of Hickory BBQ sauce. And that's just for starters. You'll have the chance to sample Boston baked beans, lobster mash or grilled Maine lobster tail and Cobb Salad (whatever that is). And not forgetting the crème de la crème of any meal: the waist-enhancing delights of their chocolate peanut butter tart. Hmmmm. In fact, the only thing on the slim side around here will be the conversation, because who wants to talk when there are so many devilishly good dishes to devour.

Belushi's Bar & Cafe, Covent Garden
The bartenders over at Belushi's have rustled up 'The Liberty Flame' shot to ensure that your 4th July is a festivity too good to even remember the next day. With two for one offers and pitchers of cocktails for under a tenner, you can make a bee line for the bar faster than Atlanta's Peachtree Road Race, safe in the knowledge that those frat boys and their elongated footballs are safely stowed 3,000 miles away.

Off Broadway
, Hackney
Off Broadway has overdosed on all things American this year, promising a stars and stripes studded soiree complete with pimped up sparkler drinks, red, white and blue shoots, a BBQ devoted to hotdogs and the odd firework or two. Better still is their Uncle Sam fancy dress competition, which'll earn every competitor a free drink and the winning outfit a 50 quid ($80.9271) tab on the bar. They've also managed to procure PBR lager at £2.50 a pop, making them the only bar on the east side to secure the newly imported brew. So, with spirits as high as Malibu Barbie's accent, don your top hats, squeeze yourself into a tailcoat and toddle on down to Broadway because THEY WANT YOU.
