Joe Harrod

Film taste: Midnight Run.

Music taste: I listen to bands that don't even exist yet.

Hangout: West is best.

Most likes (about London): Meeting people who have the chutzpah to insult you in a dryly entertaining fashion on five minutes acquaintance.

Least likes: Meeting people who think it's OK to talk about money.

Me in 10 words: Friends are the most important thing in life.

You forgot to mention the mime 'artists'. If you hate and fear silver painted men slowly doing the robot, beware. Just seeing one of these statuesque douches puts my teeth on edge and the closest I have ever come to punching a stranger really hard in the face is in Covent Garden. I still really wish I had done it.

Alicia Keys – Doesn't Mean Anything
Columbia

Alicia Keys is one of my favourites. If I can just burn a horrible image onto your brain forever I like nothing better than a good shower sing-along to 'If I Ain't Got You'.

She's amazingly talented and has shown as recently as 'Empire State of Mind' that she can still pick a hit. So why does this release, perfectly timed to follow up her VMA tour-de-force with Jay-Z, sound like a Leona Lewis track? It's just so bloody boring! Fail. 0/5

SINGLES REVIEWS - out 23 Nov 2009
La Roux – Quicksand
Great beats, great voice, hooky melodic line – the best bits pilfer Prince's 'When Doves Cry' and Outkast's bassline from 'Hey Ya'. The other thing La Roux's latest sounds a bit like... is her own biggest hit.

No way will this get played over 'In For The Kill' in a party context – it's very similar and less infectiously brilliant. Meanwhile it will get heavy rotation on the radio and outshine all the other shite on there. It's pretty good. 3.5/5

It ill behooves me to speak ill of someone so manifestly talented and well meaning but this girl is absolutely everything that's wrong, even listening to a five second clip of her singing is like exquisite torture, go away, go away, go away

Brakes – Why Tell The Truth (When It's Easier To Lie)
Rough Trade

OK, but not nearly as good as most of their stuff, this track will ironically be most people's introduction to Brakes thanks to an MTV2-friendly American video and Kooks-esque mildly satirical lyrical content. It will get heavy rotation and it's not bad... just a bit bland. Check out some of their other stuff via myspace.

They can rock harder and go a lot weirder but this is in-between landfill whimsy. 3/5

Westlife – What About Now
Sony

Westlife released a statement: "Dear Fans… much to tell you! Earlier this year... the search for new songs began. There WILL be a new album... we are very happy with the new songs and... cannot wait to hear what you think."

Well... this song went platinum in 2008 for American Idol veteran Daughtry. If all your 'new' songs are going to be cover versions from the last couple of reality TV series, unfavourable comparisons are inevitable. And this version sucks ass. What's next? 'Hallelujah'? 0/5
