Listen Here: Best Friends

Say hello to a bunch of Sheffield surf punks who think they're the musical equivalent of Brian Lara Cricket on the Mega Drive...

Sheffield garage surf dudes Best Friends have been making waves recently with their last two EPs, personally I’d liken this year’s ‘Throwing Up EP’ released on Art Is Hard Records and 2011’s self-titled release to oxygen tanks full of summer vibes and all-round good-times. In short, it’s “guitar music” that’ll make you embrace the sun more than someone who has a phobia of being pale (therefore tans a lot)

They’re due to play at the impressive Beacons festival and are playing Dalston art cafe/sweatbox Power Lunches on August 3rd alongside Charles Howl (formerly Jerry Tropicano), Yucky Slime (South East fun-punks) and Thee MVPs. We caught up with them ahead of their gig to see if these guys really are best friends and what nice things they got from Abbey Road Studios...

IF YOU THINK TOO MUCH YOUR BRAIN WILL FALL OUT by BEST FRIENDS

You must have been asked this a lot, but seeing as you’re called Best Friends, do you actually all hate each other?

Lewis: S'all love

If you were to kill off one of your best friends, who would it be and why?

L: I don’t really wanna kill anyone unless there’s a war or something.

How has the recording process been going? Visited any fancy studios recently?

L: We we're gonna go look at one on a boat the other week in London, but we'd already been driving around London doing various things for like 12 hours so basically we decided it was pretty good whatever cause it was on a boat and went home. Sorry studio guys if we messed you about. We went and mastered our single at Abbey road that day which was pretty great experience.

We recorded 'Throwing Up', the soon to be released split with Grazes and the single at Badmerchant Studios with Nick Chantler and Liam Bardell in Sheffield. They're really good guys and now we've done a bit together it makes it easy to work together. Their studio's one of a few in a converted industrial building, everyone there seems to help each other out and share their experience which is really good, Sheffield's really good for people coming together like that.

Did you steal anything from there? Or do you wish you did?

L: Nick's got a Fender Twin Reverb amp that would be really nice, but stealing's bad and he's a friend.

Jack: I robbed a sandwich from Abbey Road. It was nice.

What’s your favourite part about your band?

L: Meeting loads of cool dudes

What do you least enjoy about your band?

L: Meeting loads of cool DUDES

J: Oh and Ed's sweaty balls.

How would you go about taking over the world?

L: The internet

What video game would you compare Best Friends to?

L: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero or Brian Lara Cricket

Tell us about your forthcoming single?

L: Dunno if we're supposed to say anything or not about this yet but hopefully it will be cool. Its a single of 'Surf Bitches' with 'Grow Old' as the B-side. They're both tracks from our first EP, but personally I feel it’s cool to release this then that EP's done. Coming out on limited 7'' from Too Pure in September.

Are you looking forward to your gig at Power Lunches? You’re gonna need a bit of anti-perspirant.

L:I heard they let you put your amps loud which is nice.

And finally, do you have any advice for the youth of today?

L: Watch out for the Olympics...

J: Take lots of drugs.
