Twisted Licks Preview: Son Of Dave at 100 Club

Exemplary purveyors of live music Twisted Licks are taking another brief sojourn away from their regular residency at Hoxton’s hottest venue The Macbeth to bring you a special evening at the 100 Club on May 6th. Dropping in to provide the evening’s licks with all the twisting they can stand will be enigmatic bluesman Son Of Dave, who will be ably supported by Jamie Woon. In anticipation of this mouth-watering show, Spoonfed grabbed a few words with the elusive Son Of Dave as he prepared for the opening night of his tour.

‘I had to give it the formula, you know, give it the old radio one-two,’ he begins when prompted to chat about the catchy little number known as ‘Ain’t Going To Nike Town’ which is released as Son Of Dave’s new single on May 11th. ‘The bosses came back and told me that that was the one that should be the first single. So we had a shot at radio play, but you’ve got to have that formula for radio. In the old days you could get away with a lot more experimentation, but now 90% of what gets on the playlist is just verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus and on and on… so I got a good friend of mine and we went into the studio and reworked ‘Nike Town’ and gave it a real slick production. It’s interesting though to see what the folks will make of it who come out to the shows and hear the album version.'

Despite this self-deprecating notion those who do attend having heard the infectious ‘Ain’t Going To Nike Town’ will be in for an unmitigated treat as the rest of Son Of Dave’s latest album 03 is nothing short of mesmeric. The howling bluesman gouges licks out of the very earth, liquefying them through his fingers and releasing them in bombastic peels of distorted emotion: ‘I like to just get hold of a groove and work it into something,’ he notes.

It is perhaps no coincidence that recent events seem to have invigorated Son Of Dave’s ire. ‘There’s just three type of songs: you’ve got your love songs, or your love-making songs, and you’ve got your fighting songs. Seems like lately I’ve been getting into the fighting songs again. It was a lot of love-making for a while there.' The cause of this turn of tack would seem to be the G20 riots. ‘I went down to look around and got beaten by the cops. I used to have a lot more respect for the cops than a lot of my mates but that’s all gone now,’ he muses. Not that he wants to get too politicised: ‘you’ve got to keep that in the fighting songs category, but you know, you’ve gotta keep that down to maybe three or four’.

Son Of Dave will be touring throughout May and hits London on May 6th to light up Twisted Licks at 100 Club. Missing this would be as ill-advised as a quick run around Mexico City.
