Organisers of Notting Hill Carnival have indicated that the festival will go ahead as planned next weekend but will close early, amid fears of trouble on the streets after last week’s riots. The parade will finish by 6:30pm and the sound systems will stop by 7pm, in the hope that crowds will disperse before dark. Tim Godwin, acting commissioner for the Metropolitan police, has said that he wants the carnival to go ahead - so far no council members or police chief have told the organisers that they want the event cancelled. Police are expected to be out in force at the bank holiday weekend festival which has previously attracted crowds of one-million people. Carnival organisers are expected to make a formal decision on Thursday after a meeting with the police. In a statement, the organising committee said it would continue “to discuss measures that will be put in place to avoid any untoward incidents.”
