DJ Yoda at Fabriclive

DJ Yoda at Fabriclive

I was a late starter where DJ Yoda is concerned. In fact, I didn’t see him live until January 2006 , when he was played alongside Prototype at an event hosted by Annie Mac. Not much can be remembered about that night if I am completely honest, except the fact that I danced my 60 denier tights off with a grin the size of Britain spread across my face. Embarking on the walk of shame home the next day, I swore to myself that the next time I saw him I would pay attention.

A year passed, and our man Yoda continued doing his thing up and down the club and festival circuit, winning yet more fans and a clutch of coveted DJ awards including Best Dance Act (UK Festival awards) to add to his collection.

So, I finally made good on my promise at Fabriclive last weekend, where Yoda appeared alongside a batch of other heroes in a typically impressive line up. Whacking on my flats (so needed when you bust a groove as much as I do) I headed down to the famous former abattoir cum mega club.

You can't beat Fabric on a Friday: a wicked sound system, top DJs and a slightly smaller crowd who are serious about music and good times. Fabriclive's eclectic selection offers a mixed bag of musical wonderment, and this weekend was no exception – it rocked. Not only did I make good on my promise to pay attention to Yoda, I was also able to embrace my alternative side in Room 3 where the Filthy Dukes and friends were ripping up the dance floor with their electronic indie beats. Perfect for when your body starts to give up the ghost after 3 hours of solid dancing and you need something to pep you up.

The only problem with having such a gut rocking night in an establishment like Fabric is that time literally flies. One minute I'm freezing my backside off in the queue, cursing the bouncer for letting people in at such a snail’s pace and the next its 5am and I’m left wondering how best to get home without scaring the general public with my streaky mascara. However, if that’s the only downside I can think of, Fabric is definitely on to a winner.

And Yoda? He was great. The most humourous DJ on the UK scene, perfectly blending up his awesome hip hop scratch n paste skills with a healthy dose of 80s nostalgia, you really feel like he'd make a good pub companion for a few glasses of vino and a trawl through children's TV of yesteryear. That smile as well: he obviously loves every second, and quite frankly I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to give him a cuddle or make him do the truffle shuffle.
