Spruce Up Your Sunday

Spruce Up Your Sunday

It wasn't too long ago that Sundays were the day to be seen. When every respectable self-titled party person would be out busting a groove to the newest, sickest tunes. Sadly those days gone. Thanks to over-saturation by electro/nu rave sound systems within the M25, the Sunday social scene is starting to get somewhat tedious.

That's not to say that the aforementioned type of events aren't fun in the right circumstances. To be frank, the majority of London's population are in no position to preach about the rights and wrongs of how to spend a Sunday evening. Given a packet of pork scratching, half a bottle of Pinot and a few cheeky tequilas and you’d be surprised who you’ll see dancing well into the working week. Those who deny the odd furore into electro/clash heaven when under the influence, especially on a Sunday (something to do with the desperation of it almost being Monday, therefore only limited time till the inevitable return to the office) are more often than not lying.

The problem is, that many of us do not intend to go out after the pub on a Sunday afternoon so when faced with electro, techno or too cool for school beats it seems like we have no choice, mainly because the bar down the road is playing the exact same or we're just too drunk to care. Retox, Wet Yourself and Boombox are three main offenders, all cracking nights, but all well, slightly samey and within a ten minute stroll of one another, complete with a dirty kebab pit stop. This is the depressing fate that faces the lowly Sunday reveller. Even my local "old man" pub isn’t adverse to pumping out the odd Cormac remix.

Some would say it is time to go back to the old school, to roll back to Sunday evening adventures of yesteryear, to bring something new and cultured to the preordained Sunday piss up. The world – well, London – is our oyster, we are interested people who like interesting things, surely there must be something on the radar that will raise a flicker of excitement. Surely by some stroke of genius there are promoters out there bucking the norm, who favour rolling sounds fused with live bands and like to mix in artistic elements just as much as they like to mix their drinks. The answer is yes, there is, all you have to do is look a bit harder, spread those wings and if you’re an East dwelling bird like myself make the effort to travel a bit further than the bar at the end of the road.

If, like me, you're looking for a different way to spend your Sunday evening why not check out the launch of Uptownboogiedown at Notting Hill Arts Club on 9 March, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
