Electric Brixton launches

The 'Koko of the South' opens imminently.

After a two year refurb, it's ready. The club which has, in its chequered past, seen a great deal of action, is about to re-open. Once an old cinema, formerly The Fridge, before that, The Ace, the old building just up Brixton Road dates back to 1913. After years of being at the forefront of London clubbing, it sat dark and neglected.

But now, after a comprehensive two-year facelift, the Electric Brixton is ready to open its doors. With an events team which includes ex-staff from Egg club and clubbing giants Lock N Load, the Electric looks primed to reinvigorate clubbing south of the river.

With gold brocade curving elegantly around the staircases, a rooftop smoking terrace, a huge dancefloor beneath a giant mirrorball and stage kitted out for gigs and clubnights, it may well be the perfect event space.

Old cinemas do tend to retain that high-impact vibe and work well re-imagined as nightclubs. The sight-lines are incomparable, the air of vintage chic inimitable. It's being dubbed the Koko of the South - partly due to the layout, partly thanks to the similar variety in their scheduling.

Upcoming events include appearances from Flux Pavillion, M.A.N.D.Y, Stanton Warriors, Gilles Peterson, Hannah Holland and more.

The Grand Opening is on Saturday 24th September with Felix da Housecat.
