Orbital's Phil Hartnoll returns to Jamm.

This Friday August 12th Phil Hartnoll of Orbital fame will bring his expertise to Jamm's main room for the first time in over a year.
Phil and Paul Hartnoll are Orbital. You know – the electronica duo from the early '90s who can be included in that special group of British dance acts who forever shaped the electronic landscape. Along with Underworld, The Prodigy, Leftfield and The Chemical Brothers, Orbital helped the UK to set the bar for global dance music. Their album 'In Sides' brought a sound which UK ears hadn't heard before. It was a redefinition of things. Loathe to use the word seminal, Orbital did redefine a certain sound. Orbital won an NME award for Vibes Best Dance Act early in 1994, but it was their Glastonbury performance in '94 which set them on their path to greatness – with Q ranking it as one of the 50 greatest gigs of all time. The trademark goggle lights as they improvised and sequenced their sounds on the fly became symbolic.
Named in reference to London's orbital motorway, the M25, as a nod to the early rave scene, they have always been about the rave. Their music seemed to combine the acid house vibe with commercial success – bringing the underground to the overground if you like. Pulling in acid house influences and cutting a line which brought the underground influences of free parties to kids who were listening in their bedrooms, dreaming about the day when they too could go one of those parties.
In 2004 they split up. The brothers continued to record separately and Phil Hartnoll became an in-demand DJ. He headlined some of the biggest clubs and festivals during the years of 'the split', an experience which he says has affected his production style. And after everyone thought that was it, the duo are back together, working on a new album: “It's great to have my brother back on board,” says Phil. “The symbioses between us is unique.”
The duo played the headline Saturday Arcadia set at this year's Glastonbury – an incredible performance which Phil says “really hit the spot. After playing all the main stages at Glasto over the years, DJing this year with Arcadia was truly a feeling for us of getting back to the underground vibe. We had such a good time, the crowd were fantastic. We played a lot of new Orbital tracks from the new album.”
This August 12th Phil Hartnoll will be DJing at Jamm.
