The iconic underground club is under threat. Lowri Clarke reports.

"Police are trying to shut down Plastic People" so says the sign on the door of the club. The reasoning is a "prevention of public nuisance and of crime anti-disorder".

A PDF on Hackney Council's website here says that their license is up for review for the sake of “prevention of crime and disorder and public nuisance basis."

The club is long-standing host of FWD>> - London's seminal and pioneering dubstep night - as well as the Lost techno parties, CDR, Warm and Nonsense with Benny Blanco. It is small and notorious for blisteringly fresh music. Can anyone who's been to Plastic People honestly say it is a hotbed for crime and disorder? Or public nuisance? What about all the other clubs in the area? What about the generic bars? Why is Plastic People being targetted?

An article in the Hackney Gazzette from December reports how traces of cocaine were found in the club's female toilets and DJ booth. This could be the reason for the crackdown and the threat to one of London's best and most forward-thinking venues. (Lest we forget the cocaine traces found in the House of Commons toilets, The Ritz, The Royal Opera House? Pot and black kettle locked in finger pointing tryst.)

Cllr Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for the Hackney Ward, said "Pubs and clubs in party areas like Shoreditch have a responsibility to the community who drink in them and the people who live around them." The Twitter trending topic #saveplasticpeople is going berserk. Get involved and do your bit to campaign against this travesty.
