You are joking?

So I'm actually quite annoyed when I learn that Skrillex is playing a secret gig at The Nest. Right now. Post-grown-up dinner party, replete with political chat and Radio 4 overtures, pre-attempted early night, and the incredibly talented LA producer who has recently been exemplifying the links between dubstep and metal is playing. Metres from my location. Damnit. I have to go.
The line-up is ridiculous. Amazing for such a small club, wildly irresponsible on a school night: 16Bit, Nero, Chase and Status, Skrillex. One word from the kids in the queue and already I'm amped. “So who're you here to see?” They look at each other like it's a trick question. "Er... Skrillex." Exactly. He announced it on Facebook a few hours before, and his willing fans have poured from corners of London to witness his bass fitness. And then suddenly there he is. Smaller than we expected, but super friendly and in bloody Stoke Newington. How unlikely is this.
The crowd who we expected (hoped) might thin out after Chase and Status have all obviously cottoned on to just how amazing this young producer is. He's shot to dubstep super-stardom in a few short months, his back catalogue bristling with aggressive, comically huge dubstep-electro-drumstep anthems.
The second ever mosh pit I've seen in a club is kicking right off. All very good natured but soaked to the skin and full-on – everyone barging to the out-of-hand music. People are even crowd surfing. Crikey. Dancing is not really a possibility. There's a torrent of surging, everyone trying to get a glimpse of the guy as tune after tune pound the ample Nest sound system and screw peoples faces up with unadulterated bass glee. My guilty pleasure, his remix of Benny Benassi's 'Cinema' drops last and there's not a foot on the floor when the gigantic, freefall drop touches down. Oh my days.
And then we're off, out into the street, rushing home to bed, smug, soaked, excited, in disbelief. Skrillex – you rocked it.
