M.A.N.D.Y at Fabric

M.A.N.D.Y at Fabric

A night out at Fabric is usually preceded by a sense of gleeful anticipation, as London’s top club can generally be relied upon to deliver on all fronts. Saturday nights are particularly awesome, and the latest edition was no exception, featuring a pleasingly eclectic line up including Metro Area, Minilogue, Tobias and Get Physical label bosses M.A.N.D.Y.

Any complaints about Fabric tend to centre on the queues and crowds rather than the music itself, and though the club is full as always, the crowd enjoy an unprecedented freedom of movement. Indeed, it feels like a more relaxed affair than usual, with the more brutish element of the Fabric congregation conspicuous only by its absence.

The first musical highlight comes from Metro Area, whose retro-futuristic electro-house transforms room 3 into a glittering New York fantasy. It's groovy as hell, but by 3:30 we're ready for something a bit heavier. Downing our flirtinis, we join the hordes in room two for Minilogue, whose lamentably repetitive live set doesn't really live up to the intricate minimal house they are known to produce.
It's up to veteran Berliner Tobias in room one to lift our spirits, and he does so in style with a balanced, textured set which really makes use of Fabric's expansive sound system. His fluid, insistent tech-house juggernaut slowly works the crowd up into a trance-like state of controlled excitement, and by the time M.A.N.D.Y assume their position in the booth the tension is almost unbearable. From the moment the first massive bass line lands, it's clear that they're not going to disappoint. They play a fun, varied set which is technically inspired enough to keep the purists interested, but banging enough to keep the zombies in a blissful state of suspended animation.

With The End closing, Fabric's position at the forefront of London's clubbing scene will become even more pivotal. However, on the evidence of nights like this, there is nothing to worry about, as Fabric continues to put on ridiculously good line ups on a weekly basis – long may it last!
