The city of London is full of vibrancy. Vibrancy in its nightlife, its art scene, its entertainment and, as Evocative Foods, with chef Nuno Mendes and food futurologist Dr. Morgaine Gaye, hopes to prove, in its food.
Evocative Foods was founded by a group of 8 Masters students from Central Saint Martins to explore foods’ properties and their capability to induce thoughts, sensations and mood through chemical characteristics. Thankfully for London food lovers, they decided to bring this exploration to a special event, “Feed your Imagination,” on June 4th at The Loft Kitchen, Hackney. Feed Your Imagination is a specially designed evening featuring a menu of ten dishes paired with an assortment of cocktails that will awaken your senses – in short, draw forth a feeling of vibrancy.
I got in touch with Kate Matlock, one of the eight co-founders of Evocative Foods, to get some more information about the event.
How did this idea come about?
The Evocative Foods concept was developed to satisfy our MA Design Studies unit one final project, which was to come up with a novelty product/event/service that would result in a profit. The full brief can be found on our blog. We always knew we wanted to work with food and bring about a reconnection between the consumer and what is being eaten. The project went through many iterations before the actual event was designed.
How did you find and begin working with Chef Mendes and Dr. Gaye?
I use Twitter and happened to catch two fortuitous tweets that led to both Dr Gaye and Chef Mendes. After consulting with the team, I set up a meeting with both individuals, which shaped the project from its earlier ideas of a conceptual nature into a fundraising event with the potential to fully realise their goals: to educate and evoke emotions through food.
What are you most looking forward to about the Feed Your Imagination event?
The menu is being kept a secret for right now, but having seen it, the food is the most exciting part! We chose "Vibrant!" for our theme because it has so many great meanings and interpretations for the consumer.
The Evocative Foods group has given me a sneak peak of one of the specialised dishes Mendes has created for the night: English spring peas- on the half shell with liquid gel and flowers.
Are there going to be any more Evocative Foods events in the works?
We do not currently have another event planned, however the concept design was built around four different emotions for expansion as a series. We are really excited to see how this first event is received and will allow the feedback to inform our decision.
So whether you are looking for a completely unique culinary experience or a way to inject some vibrancy into your life, the Evocative Foods’ “Feed Your Imagination” experience is not to be missed. You can buy tickets online at http://www.evocativefoods.com/ but better get them soon – spots are limited and this is one tasty evening that will fill up fast.
