Happy weekend. Now pass the matches..

Joj picks: Trevino - Chip

Trevino - Chip (Vinyl) [3024] by frankyboy

Now what the hell is this? Reminiscent of drum and bass but much too slow at just shy of 140bpm, maybe it’s more like techno but no, that’s not quite it, the pacing is all wrong. It’s feels fast but still fat and groovy. Who exactly is responsible for these sounds? Trevino? Who’s that?

I’ll tell you who. It’s only your old pal, the diversely talented Marcus Intalex bringing down the tempo for this release with Instra:mental on Martyn's 3024 imprint. The veteran drum and bass DJ/producer turns his hand to an alternative bpm to incredible effect. The resultant track ‘Chip’, is a rollercoaster of driving bass, funky rattling synths and classic Intalex space blippery.

Lowri picks: Scuba - You Got Me

Scuba - You Got Me by Hotflush

Scuba - you have actually got me with this one. Listen to that kick drum as it opens.... you just know something special is about to happen. Restrained in the way that really good tunes are, it's the space in the music which makes you hit the roof and get all tingley.

This is almost K and D sessions I dare say - but heard with ears aged on dubstep-techno associations. It nods to so many genres and influences it's Frankenstein-esque; tech-garage, liquid DnB, skippy little half-step and big subs.

I don't care what you call it, it's a winner.

Ebony picks: M.Y.E.B. Featuring Trinity Skys - Air

Air (Preview) - M.Y.E.B Ft. Trinity Skys by Damecreativerealist

It wouldn’t be a UK Funky track without the overly long intro. The producer obviously likes to create suspense for the listener - or winds them up. Either way, once you’ve gone past the beginning, it’s a wrap. I was literally left gasping for air when the vocals met with the bellowing drum sounds that echoed through my headphones.

This is an epitome of UK funky house meeting Chicago house. DJ… drop it like it’s hot!

Danny picks: Huoratron - Cryptocracy

Huoratron - Cryptocracy by extramusicnew

Give me anything with a TB303 running through it and you’ll have to peel me off the ceiling with a fish-slice when the record ends. Huoratron has a name like the latest Decepticon baddie from Transformers 4 and sounds just as dark. It has the typical ‘big room house’ cliches I’m not fond of; the muffled bass line slowly revealing itself, the familiar raising high end, and the overused repetetive snare roll. Yet bear with me as it’s worth sitting through when the evil bass crunches in and those acid tweaks fly in all directions from the speakers. I bet Erol Alkan has this on repeat already!

Tom A picks:  Juan Soto - Dance & Claps

Dance & Claps (Original Mix) by Juan Soto

A generous helping of colourful synth-disco to make the dancefloor explode like a party popper. The keyboardist goes hell for leather, egged on by a relentless bassline with an intense vocal over the top. My one suggestion – it really needs a kickdrum to give it, well, a kick I suppose. The best part of it all though is Juan Soto's Soundcloud bio: “I'm a happy pop singer”. What a hero.
