Joj picks: Moby - Lie Down In Darkness (Photek Remix)
Lie Down In Darkness (Photek Remix) by thelittleidiot
2011 saw the welcome return of Photek, a genuinely prolific figure in electronica and dance music. Here he turns his hand to the output of another veteran, remixing Moby's 'Lie Down In Darkness'.
The fingerprints of both artists are starkly apparent on this one. Out of the haunting string symphonic come fragmented vocals, bemoaning ‘Now that you’re gone, the dawn will be no more”. Moby-esque piano melodies lead as Photek's overdriven kicks ruthlessly thump in an ominous apocalyptic vista.
Tom A picks: Azari & III - Manic
Azari & III - Manic by PurplePR
Of all the dancefloor smashing tunes Heidi dropped at Phonica's 8th birthday last weekend, this was the champion. Not just because of the harmonized vocal loop which threads the tune together and burrows down into the pit of your brain on first listen, but because even in a dingy car park venue with terrible acoustics, the air-tight production shone through and gave the Great Suffolk St Warehouse one huge jack-attack. Awesome stuff.
Lowri picks: Jacques Greene - Motivation
Motivation by Jacques Greene
Oh God I'm a sucker for a female vocal cannily juxtaposed with an edgy beat. I am also very keen on the Canadian magician responsible for this raw silk. Thirdly, I am not-so secretly hung up on Destiny's Child. So this Kelly Rowland rework really ticks my boxes. The vocal is left intact but Greene's workings elevate the tune with his typical restraint. Punches you gently while tickling your ribs.
