Vivian Girls – I Heard You Say
Polyvinyl

Vivian Girls - I Heard You Say by flogase

Vivian Girls' new
track 'I Heard You Say' features some great guitar, almost like a slowed down Dick Dale-esque kind of rift, with a Beach Boys sound, making the overall feel slightly surf rock. Then add in the harmonies of vocalists Cassie Ramone and Katy “Kickball” Goodman and you get a weird, slightly ethereal tone that similar to the Fleet Foxes.

This all makes for great  listening to on those hot summer days. 4.5/5

Funeral Party
NYC Moves to the Sound of LA

FUNERAL PARTY NYC Moves to the Sound of LA by le daron rouge

For all its sins, the US East/West coast rivalry has produced some cracking music over the years. This cow-bell laden explosion of Californian angst is no exception. It's punchy, raw and effortlessly charming - if New York really does move to the sound of LA I can't say I blame it.

Keep your ears out for our own British version, the viciously gritty 'Morecambe moves to the sound of Scarborough'. 4/5

Moon Duo
Mazes
Sacred Bones Records

Moon Duo- Mazes by sacredbones

For a long time now, beards (and facial hair in general) have contributed to the musical success of many an artist (think ZZ Top, Lemmy et al).  It’s no wonder then that Moon Duo, fronted by the bushy-bearded Ripley Johnson are capable of producing such great, upbeat, but sleazy-as-hell psychedelic-rock.

‘Mazes’ delivers an impressive, punchy dose of summer-fun.  The sun is out, grab the beers, whack this on the ipod and head to your nearest park. Summer is here. 4/5

Architecture in Helsinki – Contact High

V2

Contact High by Architecture In Helsinki

Tom and Jerry chase style keys give way to a just high pitched enough, almost retro sounding voice. This song correlates perfectly with the beginning of summer. All I see are images of sunglasses and smiles on, convertible roof down and ‘I heard you say’ playing loud. All I need now is the convertible. 4/5

Milk and Sugar Vs Vaya Con Dios - Hey (Nah Nah Nah)
Ministry of Sound

Milk and sugar vs. vaya con dios - hey (nah neh nah) by yalcinilik

Get whisked away on a gypsy swing electro tinged adventure. The '90s classic by Vaya Con Dios meets a marching skipping happy gigging beat. With Milk & Sugar's past four releases reaching number 1, this track will no doubt be a summer smash hit. It's incredibly catchy lyrics will see you hey nah nah nah-ing all day long. 3/5

Flash Ficktion – Capsules of Sun
Split Records

Flash Fiktion - Capsules Of Sun by ITCManchester

Entrepreneurial schoolgirl sets up drugs ring in local playground is the basic premise of this track. Early signs of business acumen or a slippery slope to lifelong dependency? Who gives a damn when a gem like this provokes the kind of sun-soaked, euphoric happiness that'll ‘lead you to the stars'.

It's uncut psychedelic electro pop – think Late of the Pier meets Passion Pit - providing the kind of whiz bang snap crackle pop that I imagine a pack of spaced out kids frolicking in summer rays would radiate. Let the sun-soaked good times roll. 3.5/5

Toro Y Moi/Cloud Nothings - I will Talk to You/For No Reason at All

Carpark Records

I Will Talk To You - Toro Y Moi by Weirdbrowser.blogspot.com

Cloud Nothings "For No Reason" by carparkrecords

Toro Y Moi and The Cloud Nothing’s split single is an entry of diversion and hidden disorder. Both sprawling from the lo-fi scene, there’s an expectation of disjointed static, but for Toro this is a lacklustre product that doesn’t bode well…

The Cloud Nothing’s divergent shroud of melodically-mangled chipper jangles in the form of ‘For No Reason’ lifts the record a little. Donning this more light-hearted, hook-pushing side has been kind to the popsters, but unfortunately for Toro Y Moi, ‘I Will Talk To You’ is lost under the monotone grumbles of a lifeless Panda Bear.
