The Horrors – Still Life
XL
The Horrors / Still Life by sockformation
They started out all corpsey-looking and creating music for the Grim Reaper's iPod; but over past couple of years it's like they've been thawed out revealing some cryogenically frozen psychedelic rock outfit from the 1980s.
The Horrors have mellowed out and got a little colour in their cheeks- 'Still Life' sounds like they're stepping out into the sun for the first time. It's gone a bit Simple Minds in this reinvention...imagine Faris Badwan as John Bender punching the air in 'The Breakfast Club'. 4.5/5

Grindernan – Mickey Mouse and the Good Bye Man

Grinderman - Mickey Mouse And The Goodbye Man by Mute UK
No, don't think of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Grinderman is a different animal altogether. Ditching the piano for the guitar Cave and fellow band members play guitar tunes which are as black, intense and moving as they are.
Yet within Grinderman's calm chaos you see Nick Cave's infamous discipline. Punk mixed in with Gothic blues and just plain gritty rock and roll are all undeniably controlled and let loose Quietly noisy this single is definitely worth listening to. 4/5

Little Roy - Sliver
Rocksteady
Sliver by Little Roy
If Little Roy proves anything with this cover, he proves the power of Nirvana. He shows that in their heyday, a band of grungy junkies could turn the shittest lyrics into something socially acceptable in modern culture, and we salute them for it.
However, Little Roy's reggae version of Sliver only highlights that it is no longer OK to sing lines like “Grandma take me home” or “I had to eat my dinner there, mashed potatoes and stuff like that” in any kind of song. OK, maybe reggae. 3/5

Carl Cox - Family Guy by UltraMusicFestival
For some reason, I could imagine Mr. Cox had a smile on his face whilst making this, for it has such a lovely vibe to it.
The first half of the track just makes me feel like I’m living in the ‘90s again. I see vision of my Playstation, watching and reading all about Ibiza with its bikini-clad babes and guys with too much gel in their hair vibin’ out on the beach with their dodgy shapes. Seriously wish I could say the same for the second half, which is just dull. 3/5

Panda Bear – Surfer's Hymn
Pawtracks
Surfer's Hymn / Panda Bear by ohtaffeta
A tribute to surfer's taken by the sea, this DIY, twinkly ditty is beachy and suspiciously upbeat for a song effectively referencing drowning. Although as Dom so rightly pointed out, 'it's probably the best way to go'.
The Actress remix on the flip-side is far better: more structured and electric with a beautiful slow build which ultimately delivers. 2.5/5

Little Green Cars – The John Wayne
Young and Lost Club
(Start) - While watching him play American Football from afar, New Girl at school realizes she is in love with Popular College Guy. Of course Popular College Guy will never like her back, she wears glasses and has bad hair.
(1:16) – After heroically catching the ball, Popular Collage Guy turns and notices New Girl watching. He drops football and walks towards her. She quickly buries her head in a book entitled 'Science'.
(2:24) – New Girl takes off her glasses and undoes her hair. She is now pretty. They embrace.
(2:38) – Final montage: running through fields, sharing ice cream and driving fast. Life is great when you're good looking. 2/5
