Put a little love in your heart...

Love Inks – Rock On

Hell, Yes! Records

David Essex' cracking piece of atmospheric reverb-heavy minimalism is given a contemporary revamp by Austin shoegaze dreamers Love Inks. Just as the original harked back to the prototypical rock 'n' roll rebels of the 1950s, so this little slice of wistful yearning reminisces over an early 1990s of hazy summers, all-American jukebox diners in the middle of nowhere, and breathy, blue-jeaned, road-trip frolics.

Pop will eat itself? Yep, and it tastes delicious. 5/5

Tune-Yards – Gangsta
4AD

tUnE-yArDs - Gangsta by ListenBeforeYouBuy

Not to be snooty, but when the title of a song is ‘Gangsta’, it generally precludes something I’m not going to like. However, this track surprised me – there’s a house flavour without branching into hardcore dance, and an element of ‘mash-up’ experimentalism, but in a good Avalanches style way, not a bland ‘I just stuck a horrendous rap verse over an 80s classic’ way.

Add a restless MIA-ish hip-hop beat and some good old-fashioned retro saxophone, and you’re onto an East End hipster party winner, my friend. 4/5

Django Django – Waveforms
Because Music

Django Django - Waveforms by Django Django

Django Django have returned to the surface with a string of shows with Metronomy and some snazzy new material.

This dubstep-tinged offering has a few beeps and wobbles swirling around throughout the track, possibly hinting to a brand new direction? Not quite. The vocal harmonies and primal drumbeats that made us fall in love with the Django Django of yesteryear is ever-present throughout this track. This has just enough dubstep elements to give it a psychedelic vibe. 4/5

One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful
Syco

High in energy, sugar and additives, there is no amount of Mercury Rev that will cleanse this from your now sticky sweet soul. Like that happy pink slime from Ghostbusters 2 this song looks harmless but in fact harbours the power to suck you in.

You'll be giddy with teenage hormones and find yourself coyly looking at the ground and flipping your hair because you clearly don't know what makes you beautiful. 2/5

The Special Ks – Crystal Fields
Candelion Records

Crystal Fields (Superbad Radio Edit) by SUPERBAD

Unfortunately, whoever chose the name of both the band and their song neglected to run either through the cliché-o-metre. Not only has the word 'Crystal' been completely raped by various indie-electro creators, rendering it forever linked to the kind of trendy bands who wear 3d glasses for photo-shoots, but to name your group after a drug - or, for that matter, breakfast cereal - is just so passé darling.

Not even if the music were original could I consider forgiving them, and since you ask, it isn't. Commercial, beige electro-pop. 1.5/5

Ryan York – If I Am This Forest
Cargo

Ryan York - "If I Am This Forest" by nonprojects

Starts like a pod of dolphins rapping at low volume, then Ryan pipes up making inaudible noises that people usually make in their sleep. BOOM! In comes 8-bit happy hardcore just to confuse you even more.

The whole thing sounds like an engineer has hit the reverse button whilst, no doubt, falling asleep during the recording session. It all ends like there is a bug in his loopstation amid the sea of reverb that occurred throughout. 1/5
