Suck on this, music nerds...

Born Blonde
Born Blonde – Solar

Born Blonde

Solar by bornblonde

Lovely acoustic, hypnologic sounds from Born Blonde on this record, which sounds a bit like Ocean Colour Scene and Ducktails making slow sensual love on a sunny day on a piece of green in TV’s Shameless’s Chatsworth Estate.

I have no idea what the lyrics are about and I care even less – all about the vibe on this one. The name ‘Solar’ makes me think they might be promoting ethically-sourced energy, in which case all the better. Mazel Tov to all involved. 4/5

The Lucid Dream – Love In My Veins
Holy Are You

The Lucid Dream - Love In My Veins by The Lucid Dream

Garnering praise from the likes of Artrocker, Rough Trade and BBC Radio 1's Steve Lamacq, The Lucid Dream's latest single Love In My Veins is definitely not a song of poor quality. This offering of well-crafted psychedelic rock makes you want to put on some sunglasses and sway in a mysterious, yet suave, way.

The brilliantly named Carlisle four-piece The Lucid Dream make the sort of psychedelic rock that makes you feel like you're living in the genre's glory days. Listing Spacemen 3, The Jesus And Mary Chain as well as 60s psychedelia legends Love as some of their influences, you can tell that these guys know their stuff. Which is always encouraging to see. 4/5

Howe Gelb - Spiral
Fort Lowell Records

Howe Gelb - 'Sno Angel "Spiral" by FortLowellRecords

This tune is a good old raconteur's recollection of the worst day of his life, best performed in a mid-West saloon before walking out and shooting yourself.

I do love singers who sound like they've wandered the desert continuously for 30 years with the same guitar and bottle of beer, etching lyrics with a cactus needle into the back of a buffalo, and I also love the gospel backing vocals here which float between being uplifting and haunting, much like Nick Cave but without lyrics about stabbing your wife. 4/5

Ed Sheeren – The A Team
Atlantic

The A-Team by EdSheeran

By now we’ve all forgotten Rebecca Black’s temporary internet phenomenon ‘Friday’. The joys of home safety combined with the ever-expanding online library of musical oddities means that we’re always on the lookout for the next thing to praise of send a flaming tweet of dog turd to.

Ed Sheeran could be that guy. His loop-pedal hit, ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’, is clearly a depiction of raw talent. New single, ‘The A Team’ however, sucks on a sweeter note: it’s about a girl. From innovative bedroom whiz-kid to Jason Mraz offspring, there’s more in the barrel, this just aint it. 2/5

Last Sound - Only The Lonely Know the Glow is Failing
Osaka Records

The Last Sound - Only the Lonely know the Glow is Failing by osakaRecords

I'll be honest, I think I listened to this track about eight times before I could review it. The unaffecting, sapless sigh of a bland idea of electronica was the sonic equivalent of when you get to the bottom of your page and realise you haven't actually taken in any of the words.

Then there's the rogue strand of discordant synth near the end which is like an eyelash in your eye. Only I know the glow is epically failing. 1.5/5

Calvin Harris feat. Kelis - Bounce
Sony Music Entertainment

Calvin Harris - Bounce (feat. Kelis) [Radio Rip] by JustDoHits

Oh look, it’s Calvin Harris, and he’s back doing what he does best - namely generating the kind of bland audio dirge that has the power to bore and aggravate in equal measure. I’ll keep this brief because, if you’ve listened to the track already, you’ll know that you’ll never get these minutes back.

Anyway, there’s about as much depth here as you’d need to drown a penny. Plinking in with a ‘retro’ GameBoy-style jaunty lead and building into a cheap trancey hook , a great tip would be to avoid this one altogether. Oh, and Kelis is in it. 1/5
