S.C.U.M – Amber Hands

Mute Records

S.C.U.M - Amber Hands by Mute UK

I've been listening to this non-stop for a few weeks now, but it’s only now that I've realised why. There are a few different elements in this track that give it a unique magnetism. Thomas Cohen's vocals, similar to Brian Molko, are so infectious, they hit that top part of the ear that slow caresses the middle then does the dirty on the eardrum.

Also, the psychedelic riffs pretty much whisk you away into a black hole/multi-coloured vortex of awesomeness.  4.2525/5

Future Islands – Before the Bridge
Thrill Jockey

Future Islands - Before the Bridge by thrilljockey

This tune was the direct result of an argument on a fox hunt between Bryan Ferry and an old Aristocrat. Ferry played said friend an old Roxy Music track to which the eccentric Lord Trumpington laughed and proclaimed “I could do a bloody better job than that old boy!”

Imagine how Ferry's face dropped when an hour later Trumpington burst into the billiard room wielding this little gem. Ferry was later heard to angrily mumble the words “where did the bastard pull that one from” into his sherry. 4/5

Belle and Sebastian – Come on Sister
Rough Trade

Belle & Sebastian - Come On Sister by artsandcraftsmx

Murdoch's elegant singing and storytelling; check. Quirky beats that make your toes tingle and simultaneously make you cry because they are just too true; check. Collective sounds of trumpets, drums, cello, guitar and the whole ensemble; check. Basically, ‘Come on Sister’ is everything you've already heard of from Belle & Sebastian, and the only difference is that it's their new single.

But don't be disheartened because it is their excellent consistency that makes them an amazing band and it's what stands them  out from the other trashy droopy eyed indie, alternative, pop zombies overcrowding the country.  3/5

Elephant – Allured/Actors
Memphis Industries

Allured / Actors by elephanttheband

The second single from London-based synth pop duo Elephant, ‘Allures’ pretty much follows the same breezy-electronica-meets- weird-haunted-vocals template as January’s ‘Ants’.

It’s not that it’s bad, the slow build up and tranquil singing actually get’s hypnotic towards the end, it’s just that it isn’t particularly grabbing either. In fact, if this track was a person, it’d be that really nice, well adjusted kid at school. Fine to hang out for a couple of hours in maths, but not the sort of person you’d want to light fires down the brook with. 3/5

Cold in Berlin – What Went Wrong/Destruction
2076 Records

Destruction by coldinberlin

Cold In Berlin are trying their best to offend you. (Although 'Destruction' is not as in your face as you'd expect of a song titled such). Lead singer Maya is Courtney, Shirley and Karen O rolled in the dangerous asbestos dust of London. She sure has the rough-housed voice necessary for lyrics like 'I want to fuck him but I lost my lust to live'. They've actually been asked to clean up their act for certain performances where kids may be watching - like at Student fest Beach Breaks.

'What Went Wrong' has more magnetism; a fuller sound. Any song about your ex containing the lyrics 'wanna eat your heart out one piece at a time' is OK by me. 2.5/5

Beady Eye – Beat Goes On
Beady Eye Records

Beady Eye - The Beat Goes On by Starluy

Ah, an opportunity to publicly share my feelings about Liam Gallagher's 'post-asis' musical project. If the cost is a few listens through their track 'Beat Goes On' then I can just about stomach that.

For all your best efforts you can never be, nor hope to sound anything like, The Beatles. This is outdated, hugely contrived and completely devoid of any creativity or original thought. How could you possibly impress me less Gallagher? Perhaps by attaching your track to a seriously average new sitcom, all about being northern and not funny? Oh. Well done. 1/5
