This week we learnt that Tom has a thing for sharply dressed men, Milk Maid lactates sunshine and Starboy Nathan is worse than a hangover...

Miles Kane
Come Closer
Columbia Records

Miles Kane - Come Closer - Out 19th Sept 11 by Miles Kane

Miles Kane, along with Cesc Fabregas, features highly the annoying list of ‘people my age who are much better at stuff than me’. While ‘Come Closer’ is certainly not his best work, it’s still a formidable effort.

It opens promisingly with some Jagger-esque rock ‘n’ roll strutting , but take away Alex Turner’s genius lyricism and you’re left with a lot of ‘aaaaaahs,’ and ‘woooohs’.  Nothing wrong with that of course, The Out Here Brothers built a career on baby noises. 4/5

Milk Maid – Dead Wrong
Fat Cat Records

Dead Wrong by Milk Maid

The sun's back out (for a bit) and this tune has definitely come at the right time. 'Dead Wrong' by Manchester's Milk Maid has the same summery vibe as fellow Mancunians Mazes' 'Summer Hits', but at a much slower pace .

I can see this doing well in a summer montage of badminton, inflatable paddling pools and a barbecue going – all shot on a vintage video camera.4/5

XRay Eyeballs – Sundae
Subpop

Xray Eyeballs - Sundae by hardlyartrecords

Oh wow, Xray Eyeballs would be great wouldn‘t they? Not only could you use them to cheat at poker and check out girls, imagine how handy they’d be if you ever lost your keys or if you needed to read one of your housemates letters without opening it.

In real life however, Xray Eyeballs are a bunch of guys from New York who like wearing leather jackets and making lo-fi, slightly post-punkesque garage rock like this song. They’re pretty cool, granted, but they’d be of limited use if you ever wanted to crack a safe or something. 3.5/5

Peggy Sue – Song and Dance
Wichita

Peggy Sue - Song & Dance from Wichita Recordings on Vimeo.

Judging from the band name, I had awful suspicions of old school country and western, but Dolly Parton this ain't. Cue sigh of relief.

The delicate and haunting opening is kicked up a gear by a catchy beat that underscores what is an essentially inoffensive indie track, though the plaintive, echoing vocals sometimes veer dangerously close to the whiny. Hard to dislike, but not much to sing and dance about. 3/5

Starboy Nathan Feat. Wretch 32 – Hangover
Mona Records

Starboy Nathan Feat. Wretch 32 - Hangover - Mona Records by Absolute Marketing

Pre-packaged banal R’n’B schlock. Gone are the days when rappers would spit as though they were breaking a World Record. Wretch 32 has the flow of a tortoise with rigor mortise.

Yes, I know I sound like your Dad berating “all this rubbish music nowadays” but you need to be told. One point given solely for the line 'I met a girl said she's never been sober, she kinda talks like Kerry Katona'. 1/5
