Mazes – Summer Hits

FatCat

Mazes - Summer Hits by FatCat Records

Don't you just bloody love summer? School's out, the sun is too (for the most part) and, if you're lucky, there's a chance you'll get laid. Well, that or a trip to the seaside with your parents accompanied by sand-dusted sandwiches.

This short spurt of summery radness just reminds you how quickly summer passes us by and that all good things have to come to an end. Even if it is perfect sunny weather listening material, it had to finish sometime, just why so soon? 4/5

Anna Calvi – Desire
Domino

Desire by Anna Calvi

With a title like 'Desire' you might expect this to be sexy ear silk like dear Barry White may have whipped up- plenty of 'makin' lurrve' and such. That's not the approach Ms Calvi has taken. Her desire is melodramatic and powerful, perhaps befitting to soundtrack William Wallace and his army as they make their way dancing over the hilltop in a post-modern musical remake of 'Braveheart'.

With swelling sassy vocals and gutsy sound it's wild, rich and darkly intense- kind of like a scary chocolate pudding. 3/5

Washed Out – Eyes be Closed
Sub Pop

Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed by adamlunatone

Do you like Moby?  You do?  Brilliant, then you've got something in common with Ernest Greene (also known as Washed Out).   In fact, Earnest likes Moby so much that he decided to be him. But with more hair.

There's nothing wrong with ‘Eyes be Closed’, it's a fine example of easy, chilled-out music. There's just also nothing original about it.  It's great if you just want to kick-back and relax, or if you're trying to sell a seven-seater family car with ABS and ultrasonic rear parking sensors. 2/5

Personal Space Invaders – Tough Times
Self Release

Personal Space Invaders - Tough Times (Single) by Chris Theo PR

The aptly named ‘Tough Times’ just sounds like a lazily rehashed ‘80s track. Synth infused poppiness, check. Annoying repetitive lyrics and a twanginess to aggravate the smallest of headaches, check. This duo have even hijacked Adam Ant's facial glitter.

If I wanted a song like this I'd rifle through the local bargain bin for ‘Tracks of the 80s that didn't make it.” These guys hit the nail on the head with the “compulsively compulsively” lyrics. Because with so few redeeming qualities, I just wanna compulsively throw my headphones across the room to end it. 1/5

Parade - Perfume
Asylum Records

'Perfume' (Original) by Parade

‘Perfume’s ode to chemically-scented liquid opens with a series of promising 8bit trumpet noises, but proceeds, in mere seconds, to callously dash the listener’s hopes of fanfare - or innovation – by introducing a familiar splice of contemporary r’n’bizzling vocodery which is just about as generic and derivative as you can possibly get.

Even worse, the lyrics are of substantially advanced vacuousness. I know nothing of Parade themselves, and with good luck and a fair wind I never shall. 1/5
