Faris Badwan, you're our hero...

Cat's Eyes – Over You

Cat's Eyes - Over You by edin2sun

Goth metal, shoegaze, and now 1960s wall-of-sound girl pop: if there's a new trend being revived anywhere in the world of popular music, you can pretty much guarantee that lurking presciently at the forefront is none other than the artfully dishevelled, spider-legged hipster Faris Badwan.

2011 has seen him team up with opera soprano Rachel Zeffira, and this – Over You – is their latest offering. With skipping drumbeats, densely echoing reverb, and the odd brassy toot, there's something of Ennio Morricone here, overlaid with Zeffira's elegantly floating vocals. Really good. 4/5

Echo Lake – Young Silence
No Pain In Pop

Young Silence by Echo Lake

It feels like it was just the other day when London-based quintet Echo Lake played their first gig at last year's Radfest, now I'm sat here reviewing their single for our prestigious single reviews section.

Young Silence has one of the most epically hazy introductions ever, and evokes images of the Millenium Falcon making the jump to light-speed and then laying down on a field on a beautiful summer's day. The vocals are just so right for this track, it kind of makes you want to cry at how serene they are with such fuzz-filled madness going on at the same time. 4/5

Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Body
PIAS

The Body by PIAS Entertainment

Lying in your own self pity? Or maybe you’re buzzing with euphoria from some generous stimulant. Either way 'The Body' is appropriate for any of these occasions. Dreamy, in a nostalgic sort of way, by the end of the song your left with the harsh realisation that you’re a misfit, stuck in your own skin and want to get back to that lackadaisical, ‘90s influenced, lethargic, colourful place, you had imagined.

Be warned though, the lyrics are quite dark, so it’s probably best to give it a miss if you’ve experienced a bit of trauma recently. 3/5

Woods – Find Them Empty

WOODS- Find Them Empty by WOODSIST

With this two minute ditty Brooklyn psychedelic rockers Woods do what they do best: make music for kids with Jimi Hendrix posters on their wall who dress like the cast of Scooby Doo.

There's nothing obviously wrong with it, I'm sure there's an audience sitting in a cloud of smoke somewhere who love it, just not me. I'll have those two minutes back please. 2.5/5

Runners – Starting Line
PIAS

RUNNERS - STARTING LINE by RUNNERS

Runners are a Leeds based band that has been steadily growing over the past year. Taking matters into their own hands this UK quartet weave quite textured electronic music mixing kraut synthetics with flashy disco rhythms for their first EP recently released by DUMMY records.

Starting Line is fine if you can call a single fine. It would be amazing if you're running marathons and races but as a dance song it lacks momentum or any form of kinetic energy which would allow you to dance, beam and hop at the dance floor. Starting line mirrors its name: quite linear, flat and uninterestingly boring. 2.5/5

Blink-182 – Up All Night
MCA

Blink-182 - Up All Night by fabianrocks

Sugar we're going down swinging! Oh no we're back, back for more earnest whining about something or other. Wait, did I quote the right band? Did I get that wrong because they all sound the same? Hold on, they did do that really good one 'The Rich and The Lazy'?

There's about 20 seconds of synthy intro before 'Up All Night' falls into exactly the same pattern as all the slowish Blink-182 tracks. Then there's a guitary chorus which conjures images of tatooted over grown teenagers jumping around a swimming pool – big surprise there then.  1/5
