Ganglians – Drop The Act
Souterrain Transmissions
Ganglians - Drop The Act by souterraintransmissions
A mash-up of Dirty Projectors, The Beach Boys and spring reverb, Ganglian’s ‘Drop the Act’ is another one of those records that wants you grab your board and hang a big ten through the medium of tremolo guitars and vocal harmonies.
It’s not bad, in fact the song’s subtle nod to Brian Wilson’s psychedelic period is actually quite nice, it’s just that I had my fill with this surf pop thing back in 2010. Come on guys, do try and keep up. 3.5/5

Comet Gain – An Arcade from the Warm Rain That (What's Your Rupture?)
Fortuna Pop
An Arcade From The Warm Rain That - Comet Gain by joshuadj
Some melodic guitar twanging, upbeat drums and a low sneering bass make this a pretty likeable slice of 90s indie pop. That is of course until the lead singer, probably now in his forties, whinges his way through a selection of teenage diary entries over the top of it.
Rock stars his age should be living in Primrose Hill and hanging out with gurus in India by now, not still moaning about being unemployed and having dirty trainers. My suggestion is take lots of drugs and marry a supermodel before it's too late. 3/5

Paul Weller – Starlite
Island Records
Paul Weller- Starlite by IslandRecordsA&RUK
A mixture of disco beats, snippets of piano and cheesy lyrics makes me think of Michael Hucknall joining forces with Deep Forest. There's nothing really new here. I guess Weller was smart enough in his marketing skills releasing the single for the summer.
It's the kind of track you dance to, drunk at 3 pm in some bar off Mikonos.2/5

Big Troubles – Sad Girls
Slumberland Records
Big Troubles - Sad Girls by Slumberland Records
Beginning with a hint of promise and a wistful note to the lyrics, the new indie pop offering from Big Troubles fails to go anywhere from here as breathy vocals are eaten up by their clashing sounds.
Not exactly too much of a good thing but too much of a very average thing, the plodding chorus achieves the unique accomplishment of both lodging itself in the brain and inducing mind-numbing boredom. Catchy, perhaps, but so was ‘The Birdie Song’. 2/5

Ed Sheeran – You Need Me, I don’t Need You
Atlantic
You Need Me, I Don't Need You (Single Version) by Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran’s new single sounds something like a regurgitated Maroon 5 tune with worse lyrics. The half-singing half-MCing pop disaster bursts into a bland, repetitive chorus after a timeless ‘oh-h’ at the end of each verse.
It’s irritating, vocally uninspiring and, ultimately, seems a little confused about what genre it wants to be in; the bastard child of a drunken night between pop and grime. Contrary to the title of the song, I don’t think I need this. 1/5

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds – The Death Of You And Me
EMI
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Death Of You And Me by weallwantsome1
My finger hovered over the mouse tentatively, unsure whether I should actually put myself through the agony. Reluctantly, I pressed on and was surprised to hear heavy guitar cranking and maddening synths running alongside the predictable guitar and monotonous drums. Things might not be all bad!
Then the guitar and synths halt dramatically mid bar and the realisation dawns upon me that my headphones can’t block The Horrors being played in the office. Best played on mute. 1/5
