FLATS
FLATS EP

Loog

With the Tories getting back into power I’ve really been feeling the urge to dig out some acid washed denim, buy an old pair of Dr Martins, dye my hair bright yellow and go live in some sleazy, back street flop house like a more crusty version of the baddie from Highlander.

Anyway, now that FLATS first record is out, I now also have a band I can play on my ghetto blaster while I stare creepily at stuck-up squares on the number 21. Sounding like The Exploited meeting Discharge, they’re just the thing to get right up George Osborne’s snooty nose. 4/5

Time Tourists Potions For Bad Dreams EP
Unsigned

The debut EP from Time Tourists is an intriguing affair. The duo create a menacing electro sound, driven by haunting synths and accompanied by calm vocals which gives the whole affair an eerie backdrop. At the same time, the songs are layered with melodies that wouldn't sound out of place in a rock club creating a distinctive sound that etches itself in to your head.

The title track Potion for Bad Dreams is an exhilarating ride, and like the rest of the EP, it's just a shame it doesn't last longer. 4/5

Sunday GirlSelf Control
Geffen

Sunday Girl's version of this 80's disco hit has a more airy quality to it than the original. She murmurs breathy, lazy vocals underpinned by bouncy acidic production; continuing the trend of the moment with female soloists.

Within her voice is a noticeable throwback to Nina Pearson, which is never a bad thing. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it is catchy nonetheless.  3.5/5

Bosco Delrey – Wild One

Mad Decent

A disciple from Diplo’s Mad Decent label, Bosco Delrey’s second single Wild One is a sexy knee slapping garage rock tune I can image hearing on a baking hot day in the Midwest. Midwest America that is, not Yeovil.

This danceable single has elements of soul and gospel and if you can ignore the first verse, where Bosco lazily adds an ‘O’ to the end of every couple of words for rhyming pattern, then’o’ the song’o’ is pretty good’o’.  3/5

Charlatans - Love Is Ending
Cooking Vinyl

Yo Charlatans! “Day after day you make me feel this way”!? (er.. lame) Decade after decade you produce the same songs. I see that you appear to have access to some kind of musical fountain of endless youth despite being in your third decade of existence as a band and kudos to you my friends.

But this is dull tripe for a good three minutes before your Lucozade kicks in. Love is indeed ending, maybe a career should be too. 3/5

Roni SizeRun
V

Originally on the flip side of the 1996 release of 'Soul Power', this is a repress. There is some confusion about this song's title, sometimes being listed as 'Silent Partner', but pre internet releases are hard to verify so 'Silent Partner' might not even be the same tune!

Whatever its history this is classic Size: old-school jungle drums and deep, rolling pads. It is slightly static, not really progressing at any point, but it sure will take you back to '96. 3/5

The KnocksMake It Better

HeavyRoc Music

Artists seem to have caught onto the fact that for some reason 'the whistle' has the infectious quality of being able to get in your head for days, and of course get indie kids going. 'Make It Better' by The Knocks is an undeniable summer tune, you get that from the first 3 seconds and the repeated one liners pretty much cements that fact in my ice cream filled brain.

Although I'm not too cheery just yet, maybe you should play it over and over until I'm begging to return to the dark days of winter. 3/5

Gay Beast
Charm

Skingraft

Gay Beast may be a 'no-wave' guitar, synth and drums trio, but Charm appears to have no real rhythm. The group's first new recording since the release of Second Wave is hard to relate to and sounds like a clash of instruments.

Although their first and second cd were acclaimed, Charm fails to deliver a song that is easy on the ears. It may appeal to fans of punk and broken rhythms. 2/5
