Miles Kane – Inhaler

Sony

Miles Kane - Inhaler by Miles Kane

Dear everyone who keeps comparing Mile Kane to Paul Weller: stop it. Firstly, Kane is slightly less annoying and secondly he has way better hair.

That being said ‘Inhaler’ sort of reminds of The Jam in their Motown days. Re-released after it failed to make a splash last year, it’s a mod-friendly psych verse married to an organ led-chorus that The Sonics would be pretty chuffed with. Actually, let’s just say it’s groovy. 4/5

Sealings – King Shot
Italian Beach Babes

sealings - king shot by sealings

When I listen to two-minute tracks, they're usually fast-paced three-chord quickies that don't leave  much of a lasting impression. But this track by Sealings is something different.

The smooth shoegazey riffs and the slightly muffled vocals have got me thinking hedonistic thoughts about Audrey Horne (of Twin Peaks fame) in the Roadhouse with his pumping out from the jukebox. I want this to go on for at least four more minutes, but maybe it's two minutes for health and safety reasons...  4/5

Simian Mobile Disco – Gizzard
Delicacies

Ahead of, though not to be included on, the forthcoming album, Simian Mobile Disco submit 'Gizzard'. While still recognisable as SMD, this track represents a fresh flavour and a step toward the slightly unhinged, which I like.

Tonally it would make the ideal soundtrack to a hallucinatory trip turned nightmare set against the backdrop of a sinister disused fairground where pink elephants and psychotic clowns chase you through haunted houses and twisted mirror rooms. Weird, eerie and excellent. 4/5

Revelin Sky – Firetrain
Unsigned

Firerain by Revelin Sky

If the indie rock of your Courteener or View type characters was personified, it would be a swaggering lad that belched testosterone while crushing full cans of Red Stripe over his head. Revelin Sky's indie rock would be a good lad who fell in with the right crowd and would revere your mum with her 'Mrs' title.

The pop and funk sensibilities in 'Firerain' soften the whole affair, even featuring a wah-wah guitar middle eight that a repair man-based 70s porno would be proud of. 3/5

Caged Animals – Girl On Medication
Lucky Number Seven

Caged Animals - Girls On Medication by LuckyNumberMusic

Vincent Cacchion, the face behind Caged Animals, is the man responsible for this rather beaming lo-fi grit. His debut album, and the single in question, was originally released on cassette earlier this year.

This irrational step towards his ‘Ultimate Tool’ badge in camp Hipster lacks both brains and practicality. But hey, Vincent don’t give two hoots about selling no damn records, it’s all about the bloody music, man. His next single is to be released on the back of a tortoise shell shaped like a knob.  2/5

Jedward – Bad Behaviour
Universal Music

Having never really encountered Jedward before apart from as something that used to occasionally be a trending topic on Twitter about a year ago, I really wanted to like this song, if only to wind up all the music people in the office.

Unfortunately, it really is horribly dreadful. Tinny sub-Gaga pap, dominated by a bass line that wouldn't be amiss in a Venga Boys song, and a revolting ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-wey-oh chorus that, frankly, makes me nauseous. Utterly repellent. 0/5
