Break-danceing Munchkins and broken hearts while Brookes Bros lead the charge...

Brookes Brothers - Last Night /War Cry
Breakbeat Kaos
The Brookes Brothers' newest offering 'War Cry' sees the duo moving in a totally new direction, whilst highlighting their fearless versatility. A rattling metallic percussion is carried along by huge bass sweeps and amazing strings on the breakdown, while vocals resemble some kind of call to prayer. This all combines to sound quite literally like a war cry, but leading a charge to dance rather than fight. Great listen. 5/5

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Heart in Your Heartbreak
Sumberland
Although you’ll never be able to play their music at a house-party or whatever, I have to take my hat off to Pains of Being Pure at Heart for basically reminding me how awesome late 80s indie pop was.
‘Heart in Your Heartbreak’ is basically the song Lush never wrote. Complete with bittersweet lyrics, lilting choruses and one of the best bass break-downs we’ve had this century, this is basically the make-out song to end all make-out songs. 4.5/5

Willow Smith - Whip My Hair
Roc Nation
Willow Smith is Ten...... Ten... Let that sink in. I could barely dress myself at that age and here she is singing her little lungs out and flinging her body around like a break-dancing munchkin.
But then she's not exactly from a very normal family - being the spawn of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith was never going to lead to a childhood playing with a stick and hoop. Child star weirdness aside this is actually quite a good tune, demonstrating the positive influence that dubstep has had on American R&B. 4/5

The Electric - Beautiful feat. Yarah Bravo
O.G.S
Yes, yes, and more YES. DJ Vadim must actually be made of win that's how much of a winner he is.
The Electric is his new group made up of rapper Pugs Atomz (whose new solo album is also really good), and Sabira Jade and her lovely voice. Ok it might be slightly One Self Mk2 but they were great too so who cares. Fresh, fun, hip hop that makes you yearn for Spring. 4/5

Dirty Projectors - As I went out one morning / No Intention
Domino Records
A double a-side single release from the influential Brooklyn-based band. As I Went Out One Morning is a cover of a Dylan song, but there's no point judging it based on that. Featuring lead vocals from main man David Longstreth and some wailing off-beat female harmonies, this drives forward energetically. In comparison, No Intention is more gentle in pace and mood but still features the fab male/female vocal mix and some expert string arrangements. 4/5

Patrick Wolf - Time of My Life
Mercury
After finding out that Partick Wolf is my age and undoubtedly more successful than I am, I was determined to dislike this song. Imagine my disappointment when I found it's actually quite good. The worst I can say is that it's not gripping. It's a mellow, chilled out song with understated singing and predominantly done with strings and a gently strummed guitar. The type of music used in films when the character is staring out the window of a moving train. 3.5/5

Edwyn Collins - Do It Again
Heavenly Records
I really wish I liked ‘Do It Again’ more than I do. I’m a huge fan of Edwyn Collins, but this just sounds like a lame Franz Ferdinand song. This might have something to do with the fact that so many terrible modern indie bands have made a career out of raping the Orange Juice back catalogue for all its worth. Or maybe it’s because it features of Franz’s Alex Kapranos on guitar and backing vocals. Whatever it is, it’s a disappointingly generic indie pop song from one of the best songwriters of his generation. I’m going to go and listen to ‘Coals to Newcastle’ instead. 2/5

Panda Bear - Last Night at The Jetty
Fatcat
At the risk of being blasted by music snobs, I am putting it out there: I don't like this. The video of middle America during winter makes me feel really depressed. In fact, it reminds me of the sort of music they would play at my dire school assemblies, whilst I'd get a really cold bum from sitting on a concrete floor in an unheated 1960s building. Boriiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.
Cute name though. 1.5/5
