Justice Collective
The Justice Collective – He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother

Metropolis

What can I say about this? It’s basically the likes of Macca, John Power, Beverley Knight, Robbie Williams, Mel C, the bloke from the Pet Shop Boys etc singing (poignantly) the meresybeat classic ‘He Aint Heavy, He’s My Brother; a song that is easily in the top 5 best songs ever written.

Thing is, the money raised is going to help the families of Hillsborough disaster, one of
the worst travesties of British justice in the twentith century, so it really doesn’t matter if it’s good or not, it really should be number one. 5/5

Rod Stewart - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
UMC

Cliff and Buble need to start looking over their shoulders - Rod's got himself involved in the Christmas album scene. It's been a long time coming but 'Merry Christmas Baby' is a game changer, make no mistake, a call out to the two former titans of festive stocking fillers.

The Buble classics are all there, including this one, White Christmas, and of course Santa Claus is Coming to Town, but Rod's raising the bar and coming with a strong hymn game too, usually Cliff's unchallenged territory, with Silent Night and a daring We Three Kings.  The album cover is genius, with a white suited Rod perched on a stool like some massive Christmas peacock as if to say 'I'm coming for your calendar sales next Richard you wispy haired man child'. 5/5

£1 Fish Man – One Pound Fish

Warners

Yeah, jaded cynics are going to say that this is just an attempt to turn a singing market trader from Balham into a Gangnam Style YouTube pop sensation, but to give it its due, how many other pop songs do you know that are about cheap fish? Got to have some points for that. 2/5

James Arthur – Impossible
Synco

Like all The X Factor winner’s singles this R&B tinged acousti-ballad is supposed to be a rabble rousing anthem about triumph over adversity, being true to who you are and all that malarkey, but even in its most soaring moments it just comes off as strained and ineffectual.

Truth be told, I didn't watch The X Factor this year so I have no real idea who James Arthur is or who stood in competition against him, but they must have been pretty terrible for this sap to come out on top. 1/5

Gabrielle Aplin – Power of Love
Parlophone Records

If only Gabrielle Aplin was eating a pimped-out burger from some over-hyped, no booking policy American restaurant in London, this song would epitomise everything bad about 2012; including John Lewis adverts, the rise of the Zooey Deschanel fringe, the proliferation of the word douchebag and Dom's new found love for the term “gnarley.”

The ONLY song called ‘Power of Love’ you should listen to is the one by Huey Lewis and the News during Back to the Future. Got it D-bags? 1/5
