Cymbals – No Bad Decisions

Tough Love

CYMBALS - No Bad Decisions by Tough Love

Is there anything as hit or miss as art pop? I mean for every tUnE-yArDs and Django Django there’s been a legion of people in glittery tuxedo jackets making music that sounds like Squeeze stuffed into the blender.

Luckily, ‘No Bad Decisions’ is definitely on the good side of the border. The structure might be a little crazy and you’re sort of waiting for the drop a bit by the end, but Cymbals have been clever enough to string it along with a great pop hook and some David Byrne-like vocals. 4/5

Arctic Monkeys – R U Mine?
Domino Records

Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine by DominoRecordCo

Love this already and it's only four bars in. It hits you immediately, the raw energy and taught coolness. The Monkey's have added bluesy riffs to their cocky punch-bag vocals. It's really got that British rock n roll thing going on: wanting, yearning, coupled with a late night cigarette-in-the-alley vibe. It's a bit more serious than their earlier stuff - they sound like they've grown up - and are getting better all the time. 4/5

David Lynch – Noah's Ark
Sunday Best

David Lynch - Noah's Ark by Kicsipajti

Firstly, I love David Lynch, even if this was called 'The Screaming Aeroplane Baby Song” I'd probably still be gushing over it and telling everyone they've got to think about it in a non-linear context. Having said that, this is far from the best thing on 'Crazy Clown Time'.

It's everything you'd expect to love about a Lynch creation – haunting, dark and layered with eeriness, but it's actually pretty dull without the context of the album. Maybe after 50 listens it'll suddenly make sense and be the best thing I've ever heard, or more likely, it's just not an album which lends itself to singles in the first place. 3/5

O Children – PT Stranger
Deadly People Recordings

O. Children Red Like Fire / PT Cruiser by Deadly People Recordings

I’ll be honest, I don’t really get O. Children all that much. Sounding like Nick Cave, Sisters of Mercy and The Horrors, they should by rights be one of my favourite bands in London, yet like a boxer who is a little bit afraid of his opponent, they always seem to lack that killer punch.

PT Cruiser is a perfect example of this. Starting off like an even more gothic version of 80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, it drones on for 4 and a bit minutes without really going anywhere or doing anything.  Saying that the B-side ‘Red Like Fire’ is pretty decent. 2.5/5

Little Boots –  Every Night I Say a Prayer (Tensnake Remix)
IAMSOUND

Every Night I Say A Prayer (Tensnake Remix) by LittleBoots

This bland dose of nothingness from Little Boots makes me ask one question: what's she gonna look like with a chimney on her? Her combination of generic '80s synth and bizarre '90s lyrics needs a serious shot of drama to pull off the dance/pop princess combo she's going for. Without it she may as well be Dido. 2/5
