New releases - 9th April

2:54 – You’re Early

Fiction Records

2:54 - You're Early by 2:54 Band

So finally there’s an answer to the question ‘what would Madonna sound like if she’d joined The Smiths?’ 2: 54 that’s what!

‘You’re Early’ is 4 minutes of brooding post punk that has this whole ‘Frozen’ meets ‘How Soon is Now’ vibe going on. It’s pretty bloody wicked if you ask me! 4/5

Spiritualized – Hey Jane
Double Six Records

Spiritualized 'Hey Jane' by Spiritualized

This starts well - a lot more jaunty than their usual vibe - with a spring in its step, a twinkle in its 90s indie eye, and then it ends...and like those birthday candles that just won't die, it reignites. The latter half is almost a circular jam, round and round, on and on.

My ears won't hang on to this. They slide off it like socks on a vinyl floor, skidding to some more interesting place. The video is that place. It's awesome - and the crescendo of the music syncs with a pretty heavy narrative which you can watch here. 3/5

Lana Del Rey – Blue Jeans
Interscope

Lana Del Rey - Blue Jeans by i-D online

If you want to make yourself a new name up because your own is boring then go for it honey, be anyone you want to be. Be Lana Del Rey, a brooding sexpot who sings about ruggedly handsome men in plaid shirts and dusty jeans, be Llama Del Rey if you want and walk around with a big woolly jumper on spitting at people. But, if you're going to be somebody, BE somebody.

This is far too restrained, it needs more - bigger production, more melodrama, more dust, more grit, I want it to make me wail with grief for the protagonist, not sigh with pity. Force your troubles onto me, shove them in my face, that's what I pay my money for, not for you to describe a Tommy Hilfiger advert.  3/5

Crucial Dudes/Shared Arms – Split 7”
Jump Start

Whilst I can’t help but take my hat off to a band who had both the wherewithal to call themselves Crucial Dudes and write songs called ‘Of Course I Like Music...I Like Pantera’, there’s no getting away from the fact that Crucial Dudes are four guys from New Jersey making music that is almost a direct rip off of Kid Dynamite, Lifetime and early Saves The Day.

Similarly, Ontario’s Shared Arms is pretty much the same emo/punk/hardcore thing we’ve been listening to since 2002. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool if you like this sort of thing, but most of us will shrug and move on.  3/5

Theme Park – Two Hours
Transgressive

Theme Park - Two Hours by PluggedIn

If you like Guardian Life & Style, you'll like this. It's everything everyone else is talking about but nicely colour coded. Two Hours is a good accompaniment when preparing the marinade for char-grilled squid or when wondering whether homoeopathy is for real.

It's a'ight but too filtered, too neat, too light and too thin. Don't write off Theme Park though, their track Milk at least has a bit more of a point than this airy non-issue. 2/5
