The Castillians – Sunny Wycombe

PNKSLM

Listen Here

This Castillians record is how I want music to always sound. 5 tracks of super scuzzy garage rock that’s not afraid to whip out a poppy hook or a slick as hell guitar solo when it needs to, and it even has the balls to stick a bit of country rock tear-jerker at the end, just to mess with you.

To really get the most out of this, you’ll need to get a few mates together, find out a bottle of tequila and stick this on just when everyone is starting to lose their eyesight Oh yeah! Let the good times roll. 4/5

Asobi Seksu - Never Understand
Polyvinyl Records

Asobi Seksu - Never Understand (The Jesus and Mary Chain) by Polyvinyl Records

26 years ago, Jesus and Mary Chain began rocking the boat with 'Never Understand' - their first single from debut album 'Psychocandy'. And now, years later, it's been re-hashed by the eminently sweet Asobi Seksu. They do a great job.

The dream pop shimmer works well as a replacement for the feedback of the original. It's beautiful and upbeat in a high-speed, nostalgic way, with a vibe which conjures halcyon seaside dreams and ice-cream. Surf's up, ace. 3.5/5

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds – AKA... What a Life!
Sour Mash Records

Being one of those people who loathe the baseless Manc braggadocio of the Gallagher brothers – their stupid clothes and their moronic lyrics – I was gearing up to really, really hate this song, the first single from ludicrously named new band Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

Unfortunately it starts, and it's great! All thudding, surging steam-train rhythms powering onwards, leavened by plinky piano and Noel's, um, soaring vocals. Luckily it goes on far too long and descends into exactly the kind of snooze rock that I'd been expecting. Phew! 3/5

Swimming - Neutron Wireless Crystal (Moscow Youth Cult remix)
Tummy Touch records

Swimming - Neutron Wireless Crystal [Moscow Youth Cult Remix] by Moscow Youth Cult

You can tell a lot about a band from their name. Motely Crue – a group of rag-tag rebels causing mayhem wherever they play. Guns n Roses – an explosion of heartfelt lyrics and cold hard metal. Swimming – wet and boring.

Pretentious (although you'd never guess from the title) but actually pretty enjoyable in parts. The flashes of uplifting synth remind me of low budget 80s sci-fi, which can only be a good thing, but three minutes in and I'm wondering what's for tea tonight. 2/5

Forest Fire – The News
Fat Cat

Forest Fire - The News (FatCat Single A-Side ds7fat105) by Fat Cat Records

A melodramatic pop song that sort of sounds like Beach Fossils, Fleet Foxes or whatever, Forest Fire’s new one is pleasant enough if you’re the sort of dude who likes their indie folk to have a head-swaying, Californian sunset sort of vibes.

But let’s face it, as nice as it is, listening to this is never going to piss off your parents, your teachers, or anyone else for that matter.  I could be wrong on this, but I was under the illusion pissing those sort of people off was the whole point of guitar music? 2/5
