It was a dirty scrap this week, but Big Boi has somehow come out on top...

Big Boi - Apple of my Eye
Island/DefJam
Apple Of My Eye (Big Boi feat. Jake Troth) by jaketroth
Atlanta producer Mr DJ provides earworm factor on this track with a hooky live drum beat, a horn section and loopy vocals from Jake Troth. Big Boi's staccato delivery, humour and handclaps complete a signature sound recognisable from their work together on Outkast's albums.
The most distinguishing feature is a picked out rhythm guitar line that gets completely inside your head on first listen and will turn this into a veritable torture track if it gets too many rotations this year. Proper danceable 3.5

Parquet Courts - Smart Aleck Kid
What’s Your Rupture
Smart Aleck Kid by What's Your Rupture?
AfterafewlistenstothistrackIjustfeltliketypingmyreviewlikethis. But then I realised how annoying that would be. This “rock and vomit” track from Brooklyn’s Parquet Courts is so rapidly bewildering that it just brought up memories of trying to rap along to Twista’s 'Slow Jamz' and failing miserably, thus rendering my street cred invalid.
Anyway, I’m sure the indecipherable lyrics are pretty important, and there’s a lot of vigour and tenacity to the track. Sadly it doesn’t really build up to anything, leaving you with an unsatisfied pay-off. 2.5/5

MsMr – Fantasy
Creep City
Fantasy by msmrsounds
With a name like a hospital infection and a website so flashtastic it could induce an epileptic fit, I didn’t hold out much hope for big apple popsters MsMr. And thank Jesus, Joseph and Mary I didn’t – my dear little lug holes couldn’t handle yet another let down in the indie pop arena.
With sickly yet husky harmonies and epic layered chorus’ it sounds a bit like The Pipettes have kidnapped Florence, given her a 40 a day habit and forced her to be their front woman. RUN FLORENCE, RUN. 2/5

Ameilia Lily - Party Over
Sony
This sounds like the stuff you’d mop up off the floor after an orgy at David Guetta’s house. Songs like this are only made so that shows likes Sun, Sea and Suspicious Parents have something to play during the clubbing montages.
In fact I could see this going down a treat as the last song of the night at a place like Cheapskates, but I’d much rather see it in the bargain bin at HMV (RIP). One watered down vodka and coke out of five. 1/5

Nelly – Hey Porsche
Republic/Derrty Entertainment
Nelly - Hey Porsche by Nelly Official
Well Nelly, I can certainly see why you came out of retirement for this – after all, who doesn’t love a crude metaphor equating women to cars? Oh, that’s right, everyone. Even putting aside the skin-crawling lyrics, this bland pop track is completely devoid of the energetic rap verses that made the man’s previous R&B hits catchy.
Basically, he’s phoning it in from a place where they don’t have phones. Mate, you’re going to have to do better than this to save your diamond grill from the repo man. 1/5
