Spoonfed Singles Club with Christina Aguillera, Swim Deep and Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco and Melody's Echo Chamber, you're alright, but Christina Aguillera, you really need to stop grossing us out with your man-eating look. It get's really creepy after 30.

Mac DeMarco - Ode to Visceroy

Captured Tracks

Mac DeMarco // "Ode to Viceroy" by capturedtracks

This track is a warm blanket on a chilly autumn morning; four minutes of hazy smoke-filled bliss. In the method of Hazelwood or Harrison however, through the cheeriness creeps a lingering feeling of melancholy.

Great stuff from the Montreal-based lad. 4/54/5

Melody’s Echo Chamber – You Won’t Be Missing That Part of Me
Domino

Sorry British girls, I love you, but compared to French girls you’re pretty dull. While you’re watching some idiot sing about Tea and Toast on some reality TV Show, our friends across the channel are listening to Serge Gainsborough and Air and nonchalantly making out with douche-bags in effortlessly cool discotheques. Well, they are in my head at least.

Melody’s Echo Chamber is like this fantasy incarnate. This song is pure, washed out dream pop, that sounds like the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange channelled through a cute, heart-broken Parisan. Yeah, she probably doesn’t shave her arm pits, but I think this might be love. 4/5

Swim Deep – Honey
Sony

Honey by SWIM DEEP

Britain has been doing a pretty nice line in vintage sounding pop recently. However while PINS are referencing Nick Cave and Shinnies are name-checking Smashing Pumpkins and Pogs, the closest band Swim Deep come to is Spandau Ballet; admittedly, with a bit of Joy Division thrown in.

Kicking in with a triumphant ‘Wooo’ from the lead singer, this is a full on, chiming guitar ‘80s coke rocker, that should by rights be played when the protagonist finally makes it to the prom, spys the girl standing alone, knocks out the jerk she’s with, apologises and goes on to slow dance with her while balloons fall from the ceiling and everyone claps. Aaaaaaaaand roll credits. 3/5

Christina Aguillera – Your Body
RCA Records

Christina Aguilera -Your Body by Daniel Neuta

The one good thing about Christina Aguillera releasing this new single is that it reminds me to look up some of her good tracks, the really old ones where you can actually hear her voice.

Particularly because in the 4 minutes 41 seconds of 'Your Body' you can just about make out a whole 2 minutes of what she actually sounds like. The rest of it is someone going 'can you make it a bit more Katy Perry?' 2/5

Scout Niblett - No Scrubs
DragCity

Listen, No Scrubs is about attitude. You’re TELLING that no good man that you ain’t NEVER gonna be seen on the same god damn street as him, nevermind go on a date with his broke-ass chicken liver sorry scrub ass. The only thing this girl knows about weaves is what she learnt in knitting class. Do me a favour.

You can’t just pick a random ‘90s song, do an acoustic cover and hope everyone will think it’s so kooky that they’ll be deaf to the fact that it’s actually rubbish. 2/5
