Animal Collective - Honeycomb by Klubb Ace

Buried deep on the seabed is a pirates chest full of love, and it's Animal Collective's job to dive down and get it. Passing colourful striped fish along the way, an octopus with a hat on, and lots and lots of coloured bubbles, they settle on the ocean floor and perform 'Honeycomb' to an audience of sea creatures.

The track sits somewhere between Brian Wilson's 'Smile' and classic Mega Drive platform game James Pond, with a catchy melody hidden in among playful boings, doinks and twangs. It's original and fun, and that counts for a lot these days.  4.5/5

Stealing Sheep – Shut Eye
Heavenly Recording

Stealing Sheep - Shut Eye by The Line Of Best Fit

It took me a couple of listens to get over the initial ‘oh wow someone’s brought their Casio keyboard to a medieval fair’ feel that hit me on my first listen, but I’m glad I persevered with Stealing Sheep’s new one.

Throwing together folk, electronic, chip tune, Warpaint style indie pop and Fleetwood Mac style leanings, it’s completely and utterly bonkers, but in a really cute way. Kind of like that girl at school who was actually quite hot under the crap hair cut and the bottle-bottom glasses. 4/5

Mickey Gloss – Crocodile Smile
X-Ray Recordings

Crocodile Smile by mickeygloss

Most of Crocodile Smile by Mickey Gloss is basically what The White Stripes should have sounded like. If they had been closer to this Australian self-titled “punk party” they would never have given into the Cocacola-esque branding and Jack White would never have strayed into Cold Mountain – what was that about?

Be warned, the seductive rumbling moodiness of this sedated punk tune gives way to a final sixty seconds of jingly, tingly, indefinable Woodstock weirdness, which seals the deal. 4/5

Cypress Hill and Rusko – Cypress X Rusko
V2

Cypress x Rusko "Roll It, Light It" by Cypress_Hill

So West Coast stoners Cypress Hill have teamed up with dubstep's Cockney Thug Rusko for this seismic wedge of an EP. It's five tracks of rudeness, bass, rapping and fronting, with lazers, an appearance from Damien Marley and obviously some gun shots. It's good, it's big but nothing new.

Feels like they may be jumping on the glitchy bandwagon after the crunk horse has bolted or something. Raise yer trigger fingers y'all. 3.5/5

Fresh and Onlys – Yes or No
Souterrain Transmission

The Fresh & Onlys - Yes Or No by Souterrain Transmissions

To be honest, this isn’t the most sterling effort from the Fresh and Onlys, but never-the-less it ticks all the boxes if it’s big chorus garage rock you’re after.

I’m giving this a 3/5 not because it’s a bad song, but because I know these guys can do so much better. Must try harder! 3/5
