We like our blues rock like we like our chicks; hard drinking and independent.

Deap Valley – Gonna Make My Own Money

PIAS

Gonna Make My Own Money by DeapVally

While Destiny’s Child encourage prostitution by telling girls to dump their boyfriend unless he pays their phone bill and buys them a car, Brooklyn art rockers Deap Vally deliver a strong message of female independence with ‘Gonna Make My Own Money’.

It’s as punchy as a pissed kangaroo in boxing gloves and refuses to follow a traditional structure, basically just stopping and starting wherever the fuck it wants. 4/5

Dark Horses – Radio
Last Gang Records

Dark Horses - Radio by Last Gang Entertainment

This airy, arty tune from Dark Horses has a Nouvelle Vague feeling to it for sure. But rather than wafting around French cafes with thin cigarettes reminiscing about chicer times, this band are stomping through those patisseries, smashing éclairs and whispering obscenities as they go. But they are doing it all in slow motion a la Sigur Ros, just not as cold.

It's not world-changing but the smooth almost undetectable hook and the decent riffs give Radio some street cred. Still, it doesn't quite scrape a 4. We're very discerning round these parts. 3.75/5

Splashh – Need It
Luv Luv Luv

Need It by SPLASHH

More Pavement in a spin dryer style indie stuff that everyone knows by now, at least Splashh are able to hook up their vaguely sunny noise pop to a half decent melody, making ‘Need It’ feel a little like No Age covering that ‘Feed my Sunshine’ song by Lenn.

OK, let’s face it, ‘Need It’ isn’t going to win any prizes in the new thinking awards, but it’s still a pretty nice sounding record. I mean, who needs originality all the time hey? 3/5

Franck Roger – Spread Love
Circus Company

Franck Roger - Spread Love by CircusCompany

Now that this whole acid house/hypnotic beats thing has come back in to fashion, I’ve finally come to some conclusions to why I don’t get most house stuff ; I’m too impatient. I’ve tried to get into the whole repetitive, minimal thing but I always seem to find myself in some sort of rhetorical feed-back loop going “where’s the drop? Is it going to change soon? Is it going anywhere?”

I went through all three of these stages whilst listening to Franck Roger’s new 'Spread Love' EP. At times I felt like I was a dog and I was playing catch with Mr Rogers and he kept doing that thing where you pretend to throw the ball but then don’t really throw it causing me to spin round and round with a stupid "what the hell is happening?" look on my face. Just throw the goddam ball, Franck, for all our sakes. 2/5

Calvin Harris ft Example – We’’ll Be Coming Back
Flyeye

Calvin Harris feat Example – We'll Be Coming Back by Itsmecalvinharris

What happened to British pop music? Seriously. The charts are a stale, poison infested cesspit, and this is the reason why. Ten years ago this would have been a laughable Eastern bloc Eurovision entry. No it’s not because I’m getting old – this really is just lowest common denominator noise with as much class and creativity as a bottle of WKD.

Do yourself a favour and don’t even press play. 1/5
