Dirty Beaches – Lone Runner

Suicide Squeeze

Dirty Beaches - Lone Runner by Surfing on Steam

God, I wish I was as cool as Dirty Beaches. He makes music that sounds like Roy Orbison playing from beyond the grave, can rock sunglasses at night, and can pull off the leather jacket look in any weather. Me? I look like a slightly overweight version of Dracula and almost cough up a lung every time I tackle the office stairs. Life is so not fair.

Even his music is rad. Take ‘Lone Runner’; I honestly don’t think I’ve heard a song this menacing in years. It’s like Dan Sartain, a David Lynch movie and a knife fight all rolled into one. Man, I want to hate him, but I just can’t.  4.9/5

The Saturdays – My Heart Takes Over
Polydor

My Heart Takes Over by thesaturdays

Did you know Rochelle Wiseman formerly of S Club 8 is dating Marvin from JLS and another one of the Saturdays is knocked up?

Yes, the above series of banal, ubiquitous facts that are infinitely more interesting than this dado rail of a power ballad. Although, there is a hilarious key change at 2.38 that sounds like they all coughed in unison.  2/5

The Pipettes - Boo Shuffle by The Pipettes

Slagging off The Pipettes is the written equivalent of kicking a baby kitten, although it must be said, this latest effort feels like they've crossed the line from making really good candy-coated pop into churning out cartoon theme tunes.

Not that there's anything wrong with that I suppose, if they released Denver the Last Dinosaur I'd buy it. 2/5

Rammstein – Mein Land
Universal

Mein Land [Single] [amazon.de 30 sec. snippets] by Rasputin 93

Rammstein are the living proof that German’s have a sense of humour, it’s just so off the wall that the rest of the world doesn’t get it. I mean watch the trailer for their new single – I don’t know whether to laugh or hide.

I’m sure the lyrics are suitably witty and all that, but my German isn’t that good. All you need to know is that it sounds like Europe, Killing Joke and Machine Head all at the same time. I haven’t seen the video yet, but if the last one is anything to go by, it's probably going to have the lead singer having his cock gnawed off by a pack of hyenas. Can’t wait for that. 2/5

Skream - Anticipation
Tempa

Skream - Anticipation by BeatboxB

Formerly deep underground, Skream pops his head above the commercial parapet with this nu-rave missive. It's positively poppy, with the chipmunk voice of Sam Frank telling us "I can't wait to meet you". It unwisely branches out into 'Zombie-Nation-esque' banging electro.

Yeh the kids are gonna love it. But I have a feeling Skream's deep and dark fan-base may be a little miffed by this allusion to a young Ministry dancefloor. Glow sticks? Check. Fluffy boots? erm..check. Skream, what are you doing? 1.5/5
